The poet could have been writing of the wooded slopes of Monchique, for after the heat of the Algarve's beaches it is the coolness of the hills that is most striking.
The houses of Monchique display many of the traditional features of Algarvean architecture - white walls, carved stonework, bands of colour around doors and windows - but their "saia" (literally "skirt") chimneys are quite distinct from those found on the coast.

MONCHIQUE in the Serra de Monchique range of hills is usually approached from the south on the EN266, a particularly lovely drive in late February and early March when roadside mimosa bushes are in brilliant yellow bloom.
Monchique is a market town for the products grown or hand-made in the surrounding hills, especially timber, cork, smoked ham, honey, aguardente, basketwork, leather goods and woollen sweaters.
The many restaurants on the right-hand side of the road from Caldas to Monchique and from Monchique to Fóia are renowned for their finger-lickin' chicken piri-piri lunches.

After passing through the town (one way systems so be careful) you can detour to the main tourist spots or continue south towards the coast.
Monchique, Silves and then Carvoeiro is a full day tour, but you can break the journey at many points.
