The Moncton Coliseum was previously host to the New Brunswick Hawks, Moncton Alpines, Moncton Golden Flames and the Moncton Hawks.
The Moncton Alpines franchise was granted by the QMJHL in 1995 in the wake of successful expansion to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1994.
The first few years of the Wildcats in Moncton featured a gradual improvement in the team's fortunes as more teams were added to the Maritimes and junior hockey took hold in the region.

The Moncton Hawks (also known as the New Brunswick Hawks, Moncton Alpines and Moncton Golden Flames) were a professional ice hockey team based in Moncton, New Brunswick.
The New Brunswick Hawks won the Calder Cup in 1982, and the Moncton Hawks lost to the Portland Pirates in the 1994 finals.
In 1995, the Moncton Alpines of the QMJHL filled the void in the market that was left after the Hawks folded.

In the spring of 1981, DeGray was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 8th Round of the NHL Entry Draft.
DeGray was reassigned to the Moncton Golden Flames of the American Hockey League, where he would play parts of the next three seasons.
Moncton's leading defensive scorer during the 1984-85 season, DeGray made his NHL debut during the 1985-86 season, playing one game for the Calgary Flames.

Hull was drafted out of the Junior A British Columbia Junior Hockey League's Penticton Knights as the 117th overall pick (sixth round) in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames.
He spent most of the 1986-87 season with the minor league Moncton Golden Flames, being named to the AHL's First All-Star Team and receiving the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the league's top rookie, before being recalled to the NHL for good for the 1988 season.
His nickname is the "Golden Brett", in reference to his father, the "Golden Jet"; his US-born mother Joanne divorced Bobby Hull in 1978.

Moncton went from the New Brunswick Hawks to the Moncton Alpines to the Moncton Golden Flames, and finally Moncton Hawks when the affiliation from Calgary to Winnipeg took place.
It is at this stage that Atlantic Canada had its biggest representation in the AHL as no less than six teams (Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John, PEI, St. John's and Cape Breton) had their own division (the Atlantic) in the league.
The next season the Flames finished last and a year later they were gone from the New Brunswick port city leaving only the Baby Leafs as the sole entity representing this region.
