 Serote, Mongane Wally - Profiles
Serote was one of a group of black poets who began to write and publish in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when apartheid was being applied fiercely, almost all opposition to it appeared to have crumbled, and most of the previous generation of black writers had been forced to leave the country.
Serote was perhaps the most striking writer of this group: in many of his poems he succeeded in turning an acute sociopolitical awareness and an active commitment to the cause of justice and liberation into imaginative metaphors permeated by a wholly personal, passionate lyricism.
Serote's poems are not all of the same kind, however; their content evolved partly in response to the changing sociopolitical situation, and the verse forms changed too.

In Serote’s treatment of this historical and psychological event we sense both compassion and political wisdom … Serote is still a fighter …but the fight is now, perhaps paradoxically, for peace.
One has to admire Serote’s aim of turning the huge complex drama of South Africa’s period of social and psychological transition into a series of lyrical—epic poems.
Serote’s aims and purposes are deeply humane, however.

And so, as Serote says it “with all [his] might,” ‘black shit’ becomes the all-consuming of the first stanza, the curse of frustration of the second stanza, and the violence of the third stanza rolled into one.
In this final act of utterance, Serote is directing his angst toward its proper source, to the face of the apartheid regime.
And Serote’s redefinition in the remainder of the first stanza is performing a bit of psychotherapy as well.

Mongane Wally Serote's story is far less a thriller than a collage of characters and incidents: people slip across the border for training, hide in safe houses within South Africa, go out on guerrilla operations, form relationships with each other.
