Monique Begin was disappointed that women's issues were "nowhere" in the recent federal election and that women Members of Parliament, at 20%, were far from ideal of 50% in the House of Commons.
Madame Begin recalled that violence against women was not an issue at the time of the Royal Commission, but has now evolved as an issue ending with the 1993 final report of the Canadian Panel on Violence Against Women.
The Honourable Monique Begin's has reiterated that the issues for the future of the women's movement are poverty and day care.

A sociologist by training, Monique Bégin served as executive secretary of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada from 1969-1970, followed by two years in research at the CRTC before becoming the first woman from Quebec elected to the House of Commons, as a Liberal in 1972.
But the culmination of her political career is the Canada Health Act of 1984, which enshrined universality, accessibility, and comprehensiveness, built in penalties to discourage privatization, and defined medicare as we know it.
A key stage in Monique Bégin's journey of discovery was her exemplary work with the Royal Commission on the Status of Women.

This should be readily apparent today as we hear that there are 200 scientists in the government's own department who are crying out with a message that we are headed toward despair and doom on the health safety front unless the government decides to resume responsibility and provide leadership.
I had the opportunity to be her critic for four years in the House of Commons between 1980 and 1984, a period in which we were leading up to the introduction of the Canada Health Act.
I welcome the mention of Monique Bégin because it seems to me that she was the last minister of health we have ever had in the country who did something to actually protect medicare.

The Monique Begin Nursing Advancement Award Competition is an annual public speaking competition for university nursing students.
Founded by the UNB Nursing Alumni Association in 1990, the competition was named for the Honourable Monique Begin, former Federal Minister of Health and Welfare, in recognition of her contribution to the nursing profession through provisions set out in the Canada Health Act of 1984.
The competition is intended to promote nursing both within the university setting and in the community at large, and to challenge university nursing students by providing a forum in which their scholarly activity and oral presentation skills can be judged.
