Within each mode of the monitor, a player can switch to any other without having to break connection or lose any output that the game may be producing for them.
Mode- switching is done by sending a single line of input to the server, with the first character being '@', followed by a monitor mode command.
If the monitor fails to successfully find a function in either the universe rules or the current room, it checks the object the player is using for an function whose name matches the first token.

Monitor mode enables a wireless nic to capture packets without associating with an access point or ad-hoc network.
Another aspect of monitor mode is that the NIC does not care whether the CRC values are correct for packets captured in monitor mode, so some packets that you see may in fact be corrupted.
The original monitor mode patch for the Prism2 drivers enabled monitor mode packets to be passed up using the NETLINK interface.

The pager must be manually reset to stop the audio (in monitor mode the pager will automatically reset itself when the transmission ends), this is the only difference in its operation from the Minitor II pager in the "bell" position.

The monitor mode part is mainly from airsnort while the scanning part is from older patches flying around somewhre in the net.
The main difference is that with the 0.15 the Monitor mode does not work properly, and attempts to add a patch for that failed, causing my card to freeze.
As far as I can tell in fact the monitor mod support for most cards is somewhat broken, as well as the scanning for access points feature is. The 0.13e has some code to work around those firware bugs.

Bug 710 - Monitor mode issues
When the ipw2200 driver module is loaded with 'mode=2' or if it is loaded, then turned to monitor mode with iwconfig, rfmon works according to specs..
If, however, the module is loaded but a WEP key is initially assigned - and subsequently, monitor mode is turned on and the WEP key is disabled (via iwconfig ethX mode monitor andand iwconfig ethX enc off), rfmon mode doesn't work.
I marked this as "minor" since an easy work around is simply to recycle the module (modprobe -r ipw2200 andand modprobe ipw2200) which does the trick everytime.
