Monju is a sodium-cooled, MOX-fueled loop type reactor with 3 primary coolant loops, producing 714 MWt / 280 MWe.
As of 2006, Monju is closed following a serious sodium leak and fire.
This coverup included falsifying reports and the editing of a videotape taken immediately after the accident, as well as the issuing of a gag order to employees regarding the existence of the real tapes.

Nuclear Power   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
Since December 8, when the Monju prototype fast-breeder reactor in Fukui Prefecture leaked an estimated two to three tons of liquid sodium coolant, scientists and administrators from the national government and from Donen, the semi-governmental corporation that operates the plant, have been busy dealing with the repercussions.
Monju workers are cutting away coolant pipes to retrieve the 15-centimeter long sheath of the temperature sensor that broke due to metal fatigue, causing a large sodium leak and subsequent plant shutdown on December 8 of last year.
With the fast-breeder program on hold in the aftermath of the December 1995 Monju accident, burning MOX fuel in light water reactors is an alternative way to use the plutonium in spent fuel.

On 8 December 1995, the secondary cooling circuit of the Monju reactor leaked 700 kg of molten sodium, the largest (known) sodium leak ever during the operation of a reactor.
The Monju sodium leak was not a severe nuclear accident, since it did not involve the release of radioactivity into the environment nor the injury to any of the reactor's personnel.

A group of 32 plaintiffs, mainly people living near Monju, located in Fukui Prefecture, 400 km (250 miles) west of Tokyo, want the reactor to be permanently shut down, claiming that faulty safety assessments had led to the 1995 accident.
Fast-breeder reactors were conceived in the 1960s with the objective of extending the resources of uranium fuel, but technical difficulties have beset the plants and caused many countries that initially embraced the concept to abandon their costly programmes.
The Monju leak, which sparked a fire, plus other accidents at nuclear facilities, including a 1999 accident at a nuclear fuel reprocessing facility in which two workers died, have increased public mistrust in the nuclear industry.

This was because of the late startup of the Monju Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) that was orignally supposed to use all that plutonium.
For one, the plutonium destined for Monju was not diluted with uranium, hence has to be processed before it can be used as LWR fuel.
Using the plutonium in the experimental FBR in Ibaraki prefecture sounds OK on paper but is completely pointless: That reactors was actually the precursor to Monju, the testbed for developing all of Monju's technologies but at a smaller scale and unable to breed more plutonium than it burns.
