As a consequence the sub-prior of Monk Bretton reported in 1267 that this convent had been without a prior for fifteen years, the monks claiming the free election of their prior, and the Prior of Pontefract claiming to present to the post, and actually presenting Adam de Northampton, whom the daughter house refused to accept.
On Monday preceding the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin (8 September) we arrived at the priory of Monk Bretton, accompanied by certain officers of the sheriff.
Monk Bretton was one of the greater houses, which escaped dissolution under the earlier Act.

 Monk Bretton Priory
Once standing in the seclusion of a wooded valley, Monk Bretton Priory has somehow managed to retain an air of dignity and tranquillity within the crumbling walls that offer some protection from 21st century urbanisation and industrial intrusion.
As a relatively small house of between 11 and 13 monks, the priory survived until 1538 when, in November, it was surrendered to Henry VIII.
Bought by the Earl of Shrewsbury in 1589, Monk Bretton was given to his fourth son, Henry Talbot, as a wedding present.

After the dissolution, the monks were ejected – the Prior and two brethren bought 148 of the library books and moved to nearby Worsbrough after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII.

 Bretton - Appendices to the Bretton Family History
This appendix to the Bretton family history contains details of the Manor of Bretton after it came into the possession of the Dronsfield family, one of whom was quoted in the family history as a change of name from “Bretton”.
The transition from “Bretton” to “Beaumont” is also chronicled in the history but it seems that there was also a transition in the name “Bretton” to “Dronsfield”.
He was the founder of the West Riding family of Bretton for his grandsons were known as Alan and Adam “de Bretton” and yeomen of the name Bretton who married armigerous families resided at Bretton from the beginning of the 13th century down to the middle of the 17th century.

Monk Bretton Priory was founded by Adam Fitzswaine in 1153.
The Mill of the Black Monks was restored in the early 1980's by Malcolm Lister a local architect.
It was originally the watermill for the priory from which the mill race fed into the drainage system which is one of the most intact in England.

West Bretton in the Wapentake of Agbrigg was part of the Manor of Wakefield, held by the King, Edward the Confessor, and Bretton, in the Wapentake of Staincross, was one of the possessions of the great Saxon Lord, Ailric.
In 1067 William the Conqueror laid waste practically the whole of the north and burnt towns and villages and Ilbert de Lacy, one of his faithful knights, assisted him with the "Harrying of the North" as it is known.
As a reward he was given an 'honour' and granted lands and 150 manors in Yorkshire, including Bretton and the Wapentake of Staincross, the possessions of Ailric, and this area in Yorkshire became known as the Honour of Pontefract.

Another cross, also called Ladycross, was erected near Grimethorpe, probably by the monks of Monk Bretton Priory, as a place of sanctuary, there being an old law protecting people on Church lands.

Nestling rather incongruously in a housing estate, the ruins of this Priory are presented without labels and histories, leaving the visitor to fall back on any previous visits to or knowledge of the layout of other abbeys or priories.
This last bit was easy as the remains of some columns and carved, high status doorways and windows as well as the cruciform shape were apparent.
Also, several stone coffins had been excavated, presumably for the more important burials, as the majority of the monks would be buried further from the church.

 All Saints Church Darton
In 1484 King Richard III gave the living of Darton to Monk Bretton Priory in exchange for Holcombe Forest in Westmoreland.
After the dissolution of Monk Bretton Priory, the advowson passed back to the crown, thence to the Marsh family at the end of the 16th century to their relative George Carr, and after the civil war to the Wentworth family of Woolley.
At the end of the 18th century the patronage passed to the Beaumont family of Bretton Hall with whom it remained until 1959 when Viscount Allendale's trustees gave the Right of Patronage to the Bishop of Wakefield.

In the afternoon there is an outdoor prayer stop at the cross in the floor of the nave of Monk Bretton Priory; a ruined Cluniac Monastery.
We also pay a visit to the Mill of the Black Monks which was originally own by the Cistercians at Roch Abbey who paid for corn to be ground there.
This was the priory mill, and converted into a pub several years back.

 Mill of The Black Monks
Dating back to the 11th Century it claims to be the oldest Restaurant in the UK, originally belonging to Monk Bretton Priory this building has served as many different things over its time.
We arrive at the location at approximately 10pm where we meet up with Landlord John Arliss whom has had the pub for a number of years; we unload the gear into a small room on the lower floor which we will use as the hub for the night.
He is also given images of the Monks brewing their own drink but at the same time he's told by them not to use the word 'Beer'!
