Amazon.co.uk: Monkey (Penguin Classics): Books   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Monkey depicts the adventures of Prince Tripitaka, a young Buddhist priest on a dangerous pilgrimage to India to retrieve sacred scriptures accompanied by his three unruly disciples: the greedy pig creature Pipsy, the river monster Sandy and Monkey.
'Monkey' is a fairy tale laced with Buddhist mythology and imagery.
While the character of Monkey does occupy much of the first part of the book and remains the strongest and, I'm guessing, most people's favourite character throughout, he is still only part of the entourage of characters who face the Journey.

Monkey years have also brought their share of natural disasters, as the high-strung Yang+ Monkey ushers in it's naughty mix of deception and environmental temper-tantrums.

Books at Random House of Canada | Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson
Monkey Beach combines both joy and tragedy in a harrowing yet restrained story of grief and survival, and of a family on the edge of heartbreak.
Robinson’s previous book of stories, Traplines, was remarked upon for being brutally honest, featuring rapists and drunks and drug dealers, psychopaths and sadists – proving to The New York Times that “Canadians are as weird and violent as anyone else.” Monkey Beach is just as honest, but only hints at the darker elements.
Monkey Beach evinces a love of her culture — Robinson maintains that if you don’t grow up on Oolichan grease, you’re not going to learn to love it, never mind make it; and if you grow up on supermarket vegetables, you’re not going to learn when and where to find salmonberry shoots.

Paleontologist to discuss his book on 'dawn monkey'   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
He took two years to write the book, which, as he notes in the preface, means "to add a much-needed prologue to what is now a familiar tale" -- the story of human evolution.
The book carries the readers back and forth from France to Egypt to Wyoming to China, where Beard and Carnegie colleagues have been working with Chinese counterparts since the early 1980s.
The important thing about "dawn monkey" and related discoveries, Beard says, is that they immensely lengthen the time humans have shared a common ancestry with monkey and apes.

The story of Monkey Magic and Journey to the West
The book was first translated into Japanese almost 250 years ago, and a Japanese picture book of the story was first produced in 1806.
Monkey, to call it by it's Japanese name) was commissioned by Japan's Nihon Television (NTV) in 1978 to coincide with the station's 25th anniversary.
The correct name for the programme is "Monkey" rather than "Monkey Magic" - however the latter has stuck with the show thanks to the repetition of "Monkey Magic" in the title theme, and the fact that the show was a favourite with kids when it was first run in the UK.

There’s a bit of the apostate’s trick, in that the method the book is pitching is revealed to have been the original One True Method of structuring visual story-telling, lost like a Dead Sea Scroll.
The Sequences are often described as “acts” by some writers, which always threw me. The Sequences, although fractally complete, work to advance the rising tension of the movie’s overall structure even as they resolve their own mini-structures.

Kingston's book is the embodiment of post-modern conscience.
Also, later on in the book, near the end, Wittman is raging about how Asian-American writers are all written off as "exotic" or "not quite as exotic as you'd expect." Written with painfully acute perception in masterful language, that section almost trembled with rage and furor at racial stereotypes and prejudices.
