 [No title]
In the spring of 1927 John “Jack” Hornby, Edgar Christian and Harold Adlard starved to death in an isolated cabin on the Thelon River.
Born in 1880 into a wealthy British family Hornby attended the finest of private schools excelling at cricket and rugby and after graduating was expected to either enter the family business – a cotton spinning mill in Cheshire – or perhaps become a diplomat.
Hornby had a small but adequate income from some investments back in England so he didn’t need to work and since Onoway was, back in 1904, on the edge of the civilized world there was lots of wilderness to explore.

Albert Hornby captained Lancashire for 20 years, and played for them for nearly 33.
He and his opening partner, Dick Barlow were immortalised in verse by Francis Thomson ("O my Hornby and my Barlowe long ago"), and he provided an ideal attacking foil to Barlow's careful defence.
Hornby's Test career was undistinguished - just 21 runs in six innings.

Love Monkey is a nicely written new CBS TV show which resembles the Nick Hornby / Stephen Frears masterpiece High Fidelity so much that I should like it.
Love Monkey may be based on a perfectly good novel, for all I know, and it may feature some decent writing and acting (though so far it's no House), but unfortunately I won't be able to stomach it.
It's not Sex and the City for guys--Love Monkey is an escapist fantasy in which the World Trade Center is still standing, CBGB's will be around forever, and people in the "industry" still care about the music.

The Guide -- Hornby Preaches Life’s Lessons
Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity chronicles the misadventures of a commitment-phobe who eventually comes around and learns to appreciate his long-suffering girlfriend.
Although Hornby’s dead-on renderings of the pain and complexity of romantic relationships are present in this most recent novel, the book’s primary issue is one of morality.
Hornby’s trademark clever pop references such as this abound in How to Be Good, as does his love of list making.

But while Smith tarnishes Hornby's pleasantries by making his protagonist more hubristic, his character isn't as willing as Young was to confess his inadequacies.
And one chapter involving a Bread song playing in a "bachelor aisle" at a supermarket stands against Hornby for multilayered inventiveness.
And with Hornby's shadow booming down, weighing in on Coldplay's "Yellow" and resorting to "stacks of CDs" as apartment décor detract from the novel's insouciance.

Albert Neilson Hornby (born 10 February 1847 in Blackburn, Lancashire, died 17 December 1925 in Nantwich, Cheshire) was the England cricket captain who lost the Test match at home in 1882 against the Australian cricket team that gave rise to the Ashes.
The Test match in 1882 was a one-off game played at The Oval in London, England, and the English cricket team lost it to Australia.
A N Hornby later captained England in one more Test, when he stood in for Lord Harris in the first Test of 1884.

Powell's Books - Love Monkey by Kyle Smith
Frustrated, Tom seeks the dubious advice of his buddy Shooter, a shallow sexual gladiator, and wonders why he keeps getting into arguments with Bran, his smart, sarcastic "default date." But then tragedy strikes, and everyone's attitudes toward life and love change — and even Tom begins to see himself in a new light.
By turns riotous and tenderhearted, Kyle Smith's Love Monkey is the most candid and excruciatingly funny exploration of the male mind and libido since High Fidelity.
Monkey, like the paper Tom writes for, is loud and brash, but a helluva lot of fun.

 CNN.com - Review: 'Love Monkey' funny, revealing - Apr 6, 2004
His novel "Love Monkey" has been called a male version of "Sex and the City" and an American version of Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity." It is an achingly accurate depiction of a thirty-something single man.
Despite that rather jarring transition, "Love Monkey" is an engaging romp through the mind of a single guy -- at times laugh-out-loud funny, at times endearingly touching.
The first-time author, who edits music and book reviews for People magazine, understands the life his protagonist is leading and pulls no punches as he exposes the inner life of the 21st-century single guy.

But the previews for Love Monkey intrigued me. The show is about a 30-something guy in the music business looking for love.
But the truth is that any similarity between the two is not due to the lack of originality on the part of Love Monkey's writing team, but due instead to the genius of Nick Hornby.
High Fidelity is the definitive work on the subject of music and romance, especially as it pertains to 30-something schmoes still comparing girlfriends to their favorite songs and trying to impress the woman of their dreams with their CD collection.

My only reservation with her (and this is with the character development, not Greer’s performance) is that we have already been given breadcrumbs of some unrequited something-or-other in her and Tom/Ed/Tom’s relationship, and that’s a well-traveled road that I would rather “Love Monkey” didn’t travel down.

Utterly Monkey by Nick Laird | PopMatters Book Review
The problem is that none of these influences is fully pursued and Utterly Monkey becomes a tangle of unresolved plot lines.
It's revealing that this book has been labeled a caper tale, a coming of age story, an urban satire, an example of lad-lit, a corporate skewering, and an exploration of modern relationships because in the end, it attempts to be all of those things and achieves none of them.
The unexploded bomb is a perfect metaphor for Utterly Monkey by Nick Laird -- there is a tremendous amount of power hinted at within these pages, but in the end, it fizzles like a bad fuse.

Searching for its place somewhere between Nick Hornby in subject matter and David Sedaris in its wit, this novel rests uneasily between the two.
Publishing and journalism insiders will enjoy Smith's spot-on description of the tabloid life, but women looking for insights into the male psyche, the real potential readership here, may not take kindly to Smith's unflattering dissection of his dates.
I found it to be an enjoyable read, quick, very different than the show (which was great until it got cancelled) but a much more realistic depiction of the Gen X male and how hard it is to be single or in love, etc.

Hell may have no fury like that of a woman scorned, but neither is there any torment quite like that of an ardent suitor rebuffed — the woe of the unsuccessful wooer — and Love Monkey nails it.
The tough part about writing boy books, as we may as well call them (hey, chick lit doesn't rhyme either), is that a lot of guys just aren't all that complicated.

An American by birth and a fan of Nick Hornby, I found Nick Laird's Utterly Monkey insightful, witty, and reminiscent of Hornby's work.
