The J. Geils Band's 1977 album "Monkey Island" was a commercial failure (it never managed to crack the top 50), but there seems to be a common consensus, even among professional critics, that it is in fact one of the band's best records.
But most of the album just isn't memorable enough to compete with the tough, melodious blues-and-boogie of their early-70s records, and it doesn't have the pop hooks of the band's later mainstream-oriented LPs either.
"Monkey Island" tries very hard to be a serious record, Geils' answer to The Rolling Stones' "Exile On Main Street", but all that seriousness unfortunately means that there is little or no room for the big riffs, the hooks, the grooves and the melodies that made records like "The Morning After" and "Bloodshot" so good.

The failure of this album can only be explained by the hainoeus disco drenched era within which it was released, I will leave it up to the other reviewers to dissect the individual tracks.
Some may quibble about some of the later albums being superior but I think that this is definately their most consistent studio album.
And the arrangements on "Monkey Island" have sanded away most of the grit of Geils' earlier recordings, too, although the good, solid RandB of "I'm Not Rough" does bring back memories of bluesier days.

 J. Geils Band : Monkey Island - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
One of the great lost albums, Monkey Island is where the Geils Band make the blues their own.
Unlike their 1972 live album Full House, Monkey Island refuses to pander to blues conservists or boogie-rock hammerheads; the album is steeped in the kind of pathos and bitterness that infuse the Stones' Sticky Fingers.
The album flopped, but it remains the group's most personal statement.

Monkey Island by J. Geils Band CD
Although it didn't sell in the same numbers as their '80s releases LOVE STINKS and FREEZE FRAME, the J. Geils Band's 1977 album MONKEY ISLAND is considered to be one of the group's best recordings amongst longtime fans.
While a few of the tracks still retain the festive rock direction of their earlier releases (most notably their upbeat cover of "I Do," which would become an instant concert staple), MONKEY ISLAND contains a dark undercurrent throughout.
This is most notable on the epic title track, which sounds at times like a jam session between the Rolling Stones and Santana, as well as the vicious rocker "Somebody." MONKEY ISLAND remains the J. Geils Band's most underrated and often overlooked album.
