  Save Monklands A&E - Home
Most people think the closure of Monklands AandE is a “done deal”.
But what Labour and their Lib-Dem coalition partners don’t tell you is that if they lose just 2 MSP’s, they also lose their majority.
The Monklands AandE Dept is not due to close until 2009.

The Monklands area we will be referring to is not the old "Monklands District Council" area, but is based upon the original area owned by the Monks.
The name of Monklands dates back to 1323 (the name was first recorded in the Steward's Charter of the year) but there is evidence of settlement by hunter-gatherer tribes as far back as the Mesolithic Age (c6500-4000 be).
The area roughly corresponding to the old Monklands District was gifted by Royal Charter of King Malcolm IV to the Cistercian Abbey of Newbattle in 1162.

I should now like to deal with some of the problems in Monklands district council's housing department so that a proper contrast can be drawn between a good council and a bad council.
The council could not explain the position to the ombudsman and, for that reason alone, Monklands district council was found guilty of maladministration in its housing department.
Factors that give rise to a lack of independence in housing decision-making in Monklands include the fact that the wife of the director of housing is employed in the council's Time Capsule leisure centre.

Monklands West, which was formed in 1983, was described as a 'geographical nonsense' with half its voters coming from the western part of Coatbridge & Airdrie, a third from North Lanarkshire and the rest from West Stirlingshire, East Dunbartonshire and Bothwell.
The rivalry exploded as the Monklandsgate scandal in the 1990s and was the main topic of the Monklands East by-election in 1994 with councillors from Airdrie alleging that power was hogged by Coatbridge-based Labour politicians.
In 1983, Coatbridge and Airdrie were split up with Coatbridge going to the new Monklands West seat along with Chryston and Milton to the north to form a seat whose shape could probably be most accurately described as a squiggle.

The Glasgow, Airdrie and Monklands Railway Act of 1846 was unusual among railway acts passed at this time as it depended on getting access to a central goods station in Glasgow yet the tightly packed streets of the city centre offered little scope to the builders.
However, the Monkland promoters had heard that the University of Glasgow in the High Street were contemplating moving to a new site in the west of the city and High Street was an excellent place for a station.
However, problems with approving the plans for the new University with Parliament lead the Monklanders to abandon their plans leading to the University taking them to court for GBP 12,000 for breach of contract.

One such scandal was the Monklands by-election on the 30th of June 1994, as Walker suggests 'The impact of Monklands was thus to lead many people to re-assess the significance of religious divisions in Scottish society'(1).
The Monklands scandal grew out of claims that the exclusively Catholic Labour councillors (all 17 of them) on the local council had favoured the Catholic inhabitants of Coatbridge over their Protestant Airdrie neighbours in terms of spending.
After the death of Labour leader John Smith his seat was to be contested, with the safe Labour majority under threat because of the charges of nepotism and sectarianism against the local council.
