Monkwearmouth began at the end of the seventh century thanks to a young nobleman named Benedict Biscop, born in 627 at the Royal Court of Northumbria.
Monkwearmouth Railway Station opened in 1876 and it was commented on by the late Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, who said: "If one does not mind a railway station looking like a Literary and Scientific Institution or provincial Athenaeum, Monkwearmouth is one of the most handsome stations in existence".
Monkwearmouth Railway Station is one of Sunderland's most important old industrial buildings, and after restoration it was reopened in 1973 and preserved as a popular railway museum.

 Hylton Vikings
In 716 A.D. Ceolfrith, the Abbot of the Monkwearmouth monastery left for Rome and took with him a copy of Jerome's Vulgate translation of the bible transcribed by the monks at Monkwearmouth which is now in the Laurenziana Library in Florence, Italy.
The monastery at Monkwearmouth became "an island of Mediterranean Culture in a barbarian sea" and one of the wealthiest monasteries in England.
Monkwearmouth was one of the "Tyne" ports and Biddick in Washington, where William Hilton who sailed to America on the "Fortune" in 1621 came from, was originally known as "Ullkills" - the furthest point up river that the Viking longboats could sail.

"Monkwearmouth Parish Church - This venerable edifice, which is dedicated to St. Peter, is of very ancient foundation, but little now remains of the original structure except the western porch and part of wall.
The revenue of the benefice, which is about £420 a year, is derived from tithe rent-charge, from funds administered by Queen Anne's Bounty and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, from the rent of a house and stables in Monkwearmouth, and from surplice fees.

Jarrow is on the River Tyne, while Monkwearmouth is 8 miles away in Sunderland on the north bank of the River Wear.
The special interest of this stained glass is in its possible connection with a remarkable description written by the Venerable Bede, who was a monk at Jarrow in the early eighth century.
He wrote that in 675 the Abbot of Monkwearmouth, Benedict Biscop, went abroad to Gaul to find glaziers to fill the windows of his new church which he had founded the previous year.

In Sunderland and Monkwearmouth (which is a village on the opposite side of the river from Sunderland) we have nearly 400 members.
Flag Lane and Monkwearmouth societies shared largely in the blessing, and some of the country chapels had to be enlarged to accommodate the congregations.
It was a fortunate circumstance for Southwick and Monkwearmouth that the Fairley family went to reside there in 1834, though it was a great loss to Holywell.

This was established in 1777 also, but doctrinal issues, the reasons behind the original split in the congregation, had no part to play in the establishment of the new congregation.
The break from the mother church was amicable, and the reason for establishing the new congregation in Monkwearmouth was as desirable as it was practical.
The first of three chapels associated with the Scotch Church in Monkwearmouth, it was opened for worship on the 17th of April 1778 by the Rev. William Davison of the Castle Garth Chapel in Newcastle.

Until the eighteenth century Sunderland was only linked to Hylton and Monkwearmouth on the north side of the Wear by means of the South Hylton chain ferry, or by coble (flat bottomed rowing boat).
However, it was not until 1719 that Sunderland achieved the status of a seperate parish.
Eventually roles were reversed, and in 1897 Monkwearmouth became part of Sunderland.

The connection with our family is an educated guess from coincidences of ages and dates, and from wife, Mary Chicken, and second known child, John Chicken Newton, and from possible daughter Margaret being witness at wedding of Ruth Chicken to Joseph Wardle in Sunderland Parish Church in Dec 1842.

The coal lay deep below the magnesium limestone, and the first deep pit in the region was sunk at Hetton in 1821, it was over 1000 feet deep.
Harton pit at South Shields was the deepest Tyne pit, 1290 feet deep, and Monkwearmouth at Sunderland was the deepest pit in the entire country at 1700 feet deep.
Blackhall colliery (above) started production in 1913 and was known as the wettest pit in the region, with water having to be constantly pumped out.
