		The Inyo County supervisors have been unanimous in their lack of enthusiasm for the easement idea, and have not held any public hearings or informational meetings on the topic to gather public input.

		This massive eruption resulted in the widespread deposition of the Bishop Tuff and the simultaneous 2- to 3- km subsidence of the magma chamber roof to form the present 17 by 32 km, oval depression of Long Valley Caldera.
		The Mono Craters were formed by multiple eruptions of high-silica rhyolite 40,000 - 600 years ago, and the Inyo Craters were formed by eruptions of low-silica rhyolite 5,000 - 500 years ago.
		Evidence from both seismic soundings of the crust and studies of the fabric and composition of the lava indicate that these eruptions probably originated from small, discrete magma bodies rather than from a single, large magma chamber of the sort that produced the caldera-forming eruption 760,000 years ago.

		In a 1983 precedent-setting decision, the California Supreme Court ruled that the state has an obligation to protect places such as Mono Lake "as far as feasible," even if this means a reconsideration of past water allocation decisions.

		The most recent eruptions in the area occurred from the Mono and Inyo Craters about 600 years ago, and from Negit Island in Mono Lake about 250 years ago.
		Scientists have determined that eruptions occurred in both the Inyo Craters and Mono Craters parts of the volcanic chain as recently as 600 years ago and that small eruptions occurred in Mono Lake sometime between the mid-1700's and mid-1800's.
