Mono Puff - TMBW: The They Might Be Giants Knowledge Base
Mono Puff is one of John Flansburgh's side projects.
Mono Puff's primary obstacle is the fact that founding member Hal Cragin lives on the west coast.
Flansburgh explains where the name "Mono Puff" came from in a 1997 interview with The Tech, "The name comes from an experience I had at the John Coltrane Church in San Francisco.

 Bar/None Records: Mono Puff
Besides Flansburgh's working as a musician with Mono Puff and They Might Be Giants, Flansburgh has found something of a second career for himself as a rock video director: "I was looking for a job that would sound more unlikely and dubious than "I'm in a band," and "I'm a video director" wins hands down.
It's Fun to Steal, the second full-length disc from Mono Puff, is as velvety smooth as a Dove ice cream bar mixed with the mischievous crunch of an Eskimo pie.
Unlike Mono Puff's debut, Unsupervised, which grew out of Flansburgh's solo musings, this is a saga of a band at work and play.

Mono Puff is the side project of They Might Be Giants' John Flansburgh.
Unlike John Linnell's solo music, Mono Puff actually sounds different from TMBG.
Mostly things are more retro and rock and rollish.

Sister Puff) is reported to be the lead vocalist on a new They Might Be Giants song, written and recorded for the upcoming Austin Powers sequel.
The Mono Puff song "Backstabbing Liar" can be heard in the motion picture "The Rage: Carrie 2".
The song is heard for a good 30 seconds to a minute during the film, which is longer than any pervious occurrence of a They Might Be Giants song in a movie.

All of the material was heretofore unheard by Mono Puff fans save for two songs: Imaginary Friend, previously performed at live shows and on radio programs as Felt Tip Pen, with slightly different lyrics, and Hillbilly Drummer Girl, a Young Fresh Fellows cover, also performed at live shows.
With only four songs per disc, and a combined running time of only twenty minutes, this small taste of Mono Puff to come was all anyone could get their hands on for quite a long time, and was undoubtedly played and played and replayed, until...
So, the word on Mono Puff is that Flansburgh and company have crafted a fine pop record which fuses the excellent Unsupervised approach with the delicious lick of funk and disco, to create a unique sound worth hearing (and hearing again).

Unsupervised - Mono Puff - Song Listings
John Flansburgh didn't exactly need to start a side project to unleash his twisted tunes on a surprised populous; his day job as one half of Brooklyn's notoriously twisted They Might Be Giants already had that pretty much under control.
Nevertheless, his debut "solo" record under the Mono Puff moniker is still a pure shot of typically goofy Flansburgh humor and skewered musical styles.
From the straightforward TMBG-styled rock of "Unsupervised" to the ska-tinged "Dr. Kildare" and even through the surf rock flailing of "Guitar Was the Case," the record is a nice showcase for the rock troubadour's well-focused extra time and energy.

As the newest outing from the always busy John Flansburgh Mono Puff is more of an interesting aside from his regular gig, They Might Be Giants.
Flansburgh uses the vehicle to let loose from TMBG and ironically a member of TMBG is one of the least likely people to need it.
From "The Devil Went Down To Newport (Totally Rocking)" to "To Serve Mankind" and "Guitar Was The Case" the titles speak more quirk than the lyrics.

Mono Puff: It's Fun To Steal: Pitchfork Record Review
Some performers use side projects as an opportunity to branch out and try new and totally unexpected things.
If your day job was playing in They Might Be Giants, the quirky, simplistic pop group out of New York City, you'd probably have a side project waiting to spawn from you like Mono Puff.
Combining the earnestness of Ben Folds Five with the white boy funk of Beck, It's Fun To Steal, the band's second release, is mostly comprised of deep, grooving, heavily- tweaked songs about nothing-- sort of Seinfeld meets Sly and the Family Stone.

 Mono Puff
The big complaint dimwitted rock critics have enjoyed lodging against They Might Be Giants over the years has always be that the band is too intellectual for the general public, that its cleverness was somehow off-putting to the unwashed asses who made the Spice Girls a viable property.
Perhaps TMBG's John Flansburgh had this on his mind when he created the high-hat, bass and effects-pedal-burdened side project Mono Puff.
It's all been dumbed down for easy digestion.
