Falk's Faves - The Monochrome Set
In 1980 the Monochrome Set released their debut album, the cabaret-flavored Strange Boutique, followed later that year by the singles "405 Lines" and "Apocalypso" as well as another, more accessible full-length effort, Love Zombies.
The 1990 album Dante's Casino did little to raise the Monochrome Set's chart visibility, but the band soldiered on, releasing Charade in 1993, Misere in 1994 and Trinity Road in 1995.
Following the depatrure of Square, the Monochrome Set veered even closer to light pop fare on singles like 1985's "Jacob's Ladder; " the sound subsquently crystallized on the nostalgically-themed LP The Lost Weekend.

Venomous Concept: Retroactive Abortion - PopMatters Music Review
The overall sound of the album is excellent, as the self-produced album has a sound so sludgy that it's kind of like the musical equivalent of monochrome, as drums, bass, vocals, and guitar all blur together like various shades of gray.
On this album, though, attempts at satire come off as clumsy, and it all amounts to a half hour's worth of complaining by a group of musicians who are capable of much, much more.
The members of Venomous Concept might have the musical pedigrees, the chops, and the respect, but on this album, they sound as inarticulate as a group of adolescent stoners.

 TrouserPress.com :: Monochrome Set
Beginning with a series of arty rock singles, this amusingly suave and sarcastic London quartet fronted by Bid (vocals), Lester Square (guitar) and Andy Warren (bass) —all of whom had played with Adam Ant in obscure early bands—took a sharp sardonic swing towards lightweight pop when they reached album format.
Fortunately, the highly controlled results are untainted by seriousness; even without much to say, the arch Set says it well.
Aided by producer Bob Sargeant on keyboards, the Set mixed uncommon source material (polkas, etc.) into cabaret material (à la Village Green Preservation Society Kinks) on Strange Boutique.

While The Monochrome Set was more indie guitar pop, Scarlet’s Well is a literate and magical project about remote land, during distant time.

The Mick Sinclair Archive: The Monochrome Set
Whatever they may once have been, the Monochrome Set are now primarily a record-making concern.
The set itself contains a fair sprinkling of dapper pun-pop pleasure from yesteryear with several selections from the first album, plus numerous and perhaps more concise observations from the forthcoming and very wonderful 'Eligible Bachelors' lp.

The Monochrome Set - The Best Of The Monochrome Set
Often referred to as the archetypal English band, The Monochrome Set are often ignored as big players in the post-punk boom of the early 80's.
Their first few singles and album were magnificent; 'He's Frank (Slight Return)', 'Eine Symphonie Des Grauens' and their own epomymous theme tune were perfect, exhilarating records that featured witty, ironic lyrics and fast but melodic guitars, rather like Josef K but with a sense of humour.
The main reason for their lack of success would appear to be their lack of heart; Bid's lead vocals are the definition of lugubrious which can only have served to isolate the casual listener.

Volcano, I’m Still Excited!! Volcano, I’m Still Excited!! Album Review - SoundsXP
Alas, the rest of the album doesn’t have many more standouts; there are a few interesting inserts that break up the flow with synth twiddling (‘Firebombing London’) and orchestral arrangements (‘Byron’s 24th Christmas’) but generally it’s a little monochrome for a polychromatic world.
The resultant keyboard-heavy sound, together with his high reedy voice, gives this album an 80s feel reminiscent of Elvis Costello and the Cars while, on a more contemporary note, there are several echoes of labelmates and fellow keyboards fanatics Mates of State.
The album’s quirky pop tones are a little wearing over 16 tracks.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Howl Album Review - SoundsXP
Admittedly the album isn’t perfect, too monochrome, too backwards-looking to merit comparison with the best of this year’s releases, but it’s unusually convincing for a record so apparently unaware of modernity.
The two albums, the acronymeponymous debut and follow-up “Take ‘Em On” skived by on a few solid rockers, some mildly interesting experiments and a helluva lot of feedback-seeking-tuneage.
Even more surprisingly/alarmingly, “Howl” is really rather superb, a complete reinvention, switching the muzzy fuzz of the debut for a set of songs stripped bare of ornamentation and alive with the musical spirits of the early-mid 20th century.

Franz Ferdinand: You Could Have It So Much Better...With Franz Ferdinand: Pitchfork Review
And like Duran Duran-- the band whose sound these guys spent parts of their first album hybridizing with some vintage Josef K and Monochrome Set post-punk stuff-- chances are they'll be able to go on making solid LPs from which we mostly just cherish and remember the hits.
That's the report from this album, which does a lot to lock in that M.O. As it turns out, Franz Ferdinand, like many an effective singles band, are immensely more lovable when they're on top of the world.
They go on sounding like that across the length of this album: gleefully unselfconscious, increasingly glammy and trad-rock, and almost disturbingly amped-up, to the point where most of these songs feel like they're spewing confetti all over themselves, whether you feel like helping or not.

Ever since his first album ( Details, 1988), Pernice has been collecting certain sounds which came into being all on their own, so to speak, the haphazard result of certain manipulations.
"With his 8th solo album, French composer Laurent Pernice presents the pure electronic music, providing fresh views for academic avantgarde, from the different sides of microtonal music, reductive minimalism and other methods of digital decomposition.
Thus, the first immobile music was based on a double bass using only its extreme high notes and on a zither played with bass drumsticks.

Her debut album Big Science is lot like its monochrome cover shot of spiky-haired and andronygous Anderson in a white-washed suit and goggles against a stark grey background.
While most tracks on their self-titled album are based on the combination of acoustic guitar, various flutes and vocals (in English), the arrangements tend to vary, thanks to the contribution of numerous guests on violins, oboe, clarinet, percussions, bass, choir, piano, etc. As a rule though, the sound remains light, natural and essentially acoustic.
There are twelve pieces on this album in all, and the most interesting tracks (from the standpoint of progressiveness) are from 2 to 5, though, on the whole, this album is full of exceptionally original melodies.
