Monogamous marriage comes on the scene as the subjugation of the one sex by the other; it announces a struggle between the sexes unknown throughout the whole previous prehistoric period.
Monogamous marriage was a great historical step forward; nevertheless, together with slavery and private wealth, it opens the period that has lasted until today in which every step forward is also relatively a step backward, in which prosperity and development for some is won through the misery and frustration of others.
In the pairing marriage it was customary for the mothers to settle the marriages of their children; here, too, the decisive considerations are the new ties of kinship, which are to give the young pair a stronger position in the gens and tribe.

If gay marriage is legalized once and for all, not all gay married couples will choose to be monogamous, just as not all straight couples choose to be monogamous.
Marriage may not transform gay men into models of monogamous behavior, but marriage and family life will nudge us in that direction, moving us toward durability and exclusivity.
Human beings didn't evolve to be monogamous, and everything from divorce rates to recent impeachment proceedings prove, I think, that the expectation of lifelong monogamy places an incredible strain on a marriage.

Gay Marriage vs. American Marriage by Kay S. Hymowitz, City Journal Summer 2004
Advocates for gay marriage cite the historical evolution of that ideal—which we might call republican marriage—to bolster their case, arguing that gay unions are a natural extension of America's dedication to civil rights and to individual freedom.
Given that marriage was originally a religious sacrament, the Founders understood that the institution retained, even in their secular republic, an element of spirituality, an assertion that man is something higher than the beasts and more than a merely material being.
Marriage was becoming a minimalist institution; people now thought of it as an intimate relationship between two adults, having little to do with children and nothing to do with propagating the political and moral culture.

Beyond Gay Marriage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Marriage, Ettelbrick reminded her fellow activists, "has long been the focus of radical feminist revulsion." Encouraging gays to marry, said Ettelbrick, would only force gay "assimilation" to American norms, when the real object of the gay rights movement ought to be getting Americans to accept gay difference.
In Hawkins's words, the proliferation of such arrangements "would turn marriage into the moral equivalent of a Social Security benefit." The effect would be to further diminish the sense that a woman ought to be married to the father of her children.
Hawkins thinks gay marriages of convenience would be contracted in significant numbers--certainly enough to draw the attention of a media eager to tout such unions as the hip, postmodern marriages of the moment.

 Marriage Isn't A Recent Invention
Essig's argument against marriage is the typical radical feminist view that was borrowed from Marxism -- marriage is an inherently oppressive social institution.
But Essig really drops the ball when she bizarrely claims that "Monogamous, heterosexual marriages were an invention of the Industrial Revolution's emerging middle-class." This claim is so absurdly wrong that it's unbelievable the Salon editor's let it pass.
Even in cultures where monogamous marriage was not the rule, some form of marriage institution is pretty much universal (anyone who disagree is more than welcome to name a single culture that had absolutely no marriage-like institution).

Althouse: Distinguishing gay marriage and polygamy -- part 2.
I was thinking yesterday, “Marriage is really the only relationship in which you come to see and know and love another person a little bit the way God does — that is, as he or she is.” I don’t mean the word “love,” there, as a good feeling.
The current definition of marriage should be subject to intermediate scrutiny based on gender discrimination because with respect to marrying a man, men are selectively (as opposed to women) disabled by the government.
Marriage has begun to disappear among their members, replaced by the primacy of the single mom, an arrangement no serious scientist can claim is superior to traditional marriage.

The first years of plural marriage can be the worst for until one wife has crossed the veil into the firstborn and become a properly endowed matriarch -- freed of jealosy and the desire to possess -- the marriage will be an up-hill struggle.

NG BBS - Is monogamous marriage outdated?
Posted: 4/17/04 12:45 PM I decided to post this new topic in response to a sub-argument that arose in the "Gay Marriage Rights" string that I found really interesting and wanted to pursue, but it didn't really fit into the other topic.
And I DON'T think that denying people who have a genuine desire for multiple marriage partners the right to do so just because it is legally more "complicated" is a valid answer.
Or that "monogamous marriage" has "always been the norm so why change it?" - that is denying anyone but heterosexual, serial monogamists the right to express their own sexual desire.
