Kemet.org >> Terms Used by the Kemetic Orthodox
Monolatry is the belief that god (as the One) can manifest Itself into other aspects and manifestations (the Many) with Their own personalities and interactions between one another, without ever losing sight of the fact that They all spring forth from the initial One.
Monolatry is a form of polytheism, "many gods," but it also permits for a singular Godhead, so Kemetic religion as a monolatry is a modified or irregular polytheism.
Sometimes monolatry is referred to as "henotheism," but as henotheism does not permit a singular Godhead behind many gods, it is not an entirely accurate definition.

Particularly interesting to me was quite a basic term that I had never come across, "monolatry", which Kemetic Orthodoxy is one example.
Quote: "Monolatry is a different concept than monotheism, where it is believed God manifests in one form and one form only, nor is it an undifferentiated polytheism, where many gods appear in many separate and distinct forms.
Monolatry is a special form of polytheism, having a multi-god structure still providing the possibility of understanding all divine beings as part of one divine source." I'm surprised this sect is not more well known than it is...

Henotheism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Henotheism (Inclusive Monotheism, Monolatrism, or Monolatry) is the worship of only one god, while acknowledging that other gods exist.
Sometimes, monolatrism and henotheism are distinguished as follows: in monolatry, only one god is viewed as worthy of worship, the remainder viewed as inferior; in henotheism, the other gods are viewed as important and worthy of worship by others, however the henotheists worship only one god.
Henotheism isn't simply a belief in a supreme god amongst many, or the predominant worship of one god with secondary worship of others, since these are forms of polytheism.

MyJewishLearning.com - Ideas & Belief: Moses and Monotheism
It is sometimes contrasted with monolatry, namely "the worship of but one god when other gods are recognized as existing" (Random House Dictionary).
Although Moses tells the Israelites in 4:32-35 and 39 that the events of the Exodus and Mount Sinai show that there are no gods but the Lord, that passage is the first in the Torah to make this point (see also 7:9).
And since historical books such as Judges and Kings state that the Israelites continued to worship other gods throughout their history, these scholars conclude that even the requirement of monolatry was not widely accepted in Israel until shortly before the Babylonian exile, or even later.

The concept of monolatry and the national struggle for life against the gods and peoples of Canaan combined to beget the idea that Jehovah was a most fearful Deity.
The concept of monolatry was not without ethical content, and the God whose worship was united with the moral code of the decalogue must have been regarded as unapproachable in majesty, “glorious in holiness and fearful in praises” (Exod.
Those scriptures which imply a current monolatry rather than monotheism extol the God of Abraham and of Israel as the Mighty One who can send floods of waters to destroy mankind, and rain fire and brimstone to overthrow the wicked cities of the plain of Sodom.

The mediating stage in such a development is found in monolatry, where the godhead is reduced to one only as far as worship is concerned, while ontologically there is a plurality of gods.
It is a mediating stage inasmuch as the arithmetical reduction to oneness is partial.
The full reduction of the godhead in all its aspects to oneness emerges from monolatry only later in biblical classical prophecy, when God is claimed not only as the one God of Israel but as the one God of universal history.

Yes, YHVH was the only God that the Hebrews were allowed to worship (monolatry), but that did not mean that there were not patron and personal deities of other nations.
Monolatry — though demanding only the worship of YHVH — did not dispel their belief in other gods.
Consider the phrases they used to praise God: “For YHVH your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, who does not regard persons, or takes rewards,” (Deuteronomy 10:17).

Whereas henotheism believes in many gods, but with one supremely powerful god, monolatry believes in many gods, but with only one god that is worthy of worship.
According to suggestions I've seen, the shift from monolatry to outright monotheism was a scheme begun by the Yahwist priesthood shortly after Nebuchadrezzar's failed siege of Jerusalem and finalised while in Babylonian exile in order to keep themselves in business.
The argument goes something like this: in any polytheistic system (which henotheism/monolatry is), whatever duties individual members of a people might owe to the deity, the relationship between between a deity and a people collectively is that of employee to employer, and the deity is expected to serve the people - or else.

CGR Community - Monotheism in the OT
As of late, there are some 'scholars' who, looking at the OT using the historical critical method that have claimed that Yahwism was at first one of many God's within Israel and then gradually developed into a Monolatry (1 God first among many), and then monotheism.
however, there are many verses in the OT that can be seen as monolatry, that Yahweh is greater than Ba'al and the other Gods while seemingly acknowledging the existence (or at least not clearly stating that they do not exist) of these lesser, non Israelite deities.
This would be henotheism, but not the monolatry proposed by you above.

That sounds very much like the law of the excluded middle (a proposition is either true, or not - there is no 3rd, or middle, option), which in turn leads me to strict dualism (true/false, good/bad, real/imaginary, etc).
If the difference between monolatry and monotheism is the application of strict dualism, then the question about the possibility of a monotheistic formulation becomes significant.
I agree that both the archeological evidence and the straight forward reading of the OT point at monolatry rather than monotheism.
