		The Monomachine might be the result of a matter-transporter merging of a synthesizer and a drum machine.
		According to a couple of Monomachine owners I spoke to, this appears to be atypical.
		The Monomachine is a difficult instrument to sum up neatly, perhaps because it refuses to conform to any expectation based on products from other companies; Elektron have taken an unconventional approach to almost every aspect of sound creation and sequencing.

		To the left of the Monomachine's prominent three-octave (37-note) keyboard are all of the important master controls: a synthesis-parameter edit section consisting of eight soft-knob encoders (and a dedicated track volume knob), six track-select buttons, various system and navigation buttons, preset bank-select buttons, a row of 16 trigger/sequencer step-entry buttons and sequencer transport controllers.
		The first is to think of the Monomachine as a six-part multitimbral monophonic synthesizer, in which each track can be independently programmed with individual sound-generating Machines or effects Machines, which can be controlled on their own MIDI channels.
		Monomachine's strong point is not so much as a stand-alone monosynth or as a prefab sequence player, but as a highly interactive performance machine.

		Built upon Commodore 64’s sound chip, the SID 6581 chip (yup, you read that right, C64’s sound chip!) and encased in “reassuringly heavy” aluminium you have to admit it looks mighty cool…have a list to the sound clips because it sounds cool as well.

		Very importantly, everyone who has ever used one seems to say they're fantastic (I once spent some time with a MonoMachine.
		It was pretty baffling, but sounded like nothing else and definitely an expensive, well-made thing.) This slightly bad-tempered thread over at EM411 catches the debate pretty well.
		buy or crack as many sp-1200, old digital synth and lofi sampler emulators as you* like, and spend as little or as much as you care, but you still won't have a machinedrum or a monomachine.
