Monomyth - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The monomyth (often referred to as the Hero's Journey) is a cyclical journey found in myths suggested by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) [1].
Campbell's account of the monomyth explains its ubiquity through a mixture of Jungian archetypes, unconscious forces of mind from the Freudian conception, and Arnold van Gennep's structuring of rites of passage rituals.
Since the late 1960s, with the introduction of Post-structuralism, theories such as the monomyth (which are dependent upon approaches based in Structuralism) have lost ground in the academy.

Jungian and Campbellian monomyth - Topic Powered by eve community
I think of it more as a Campbellian Monomyth (based on the writings of Joseph Campbell, purveyor of Myths) since that's more the path that I studied, but of course that's based on Jung's theories which are based on Freud's.
The Campbellian monomyth is based in the Jungian notion of the collective unconscious which, in a nutshell, claims that every culture's myths spring from dreams of said culture and that since all humans share a similar brain (biologically) then we all share similar forms in or unconscious (the collective).
Such forms include the anima (the goddesses do not equal Shadow's dead wife, rather they are all manifestations of the ego-consciousness's (Shadow's) anima, that is, his repressed qualities--such as living a full life, which is really the whole point of the story) and the mentor or father-figure (Wednesday) and the nemesis, or anti-father, Loki.
