  Bitstream Vera Fonts README
Font rendering in Gnome or KDE is the combination of algorithms in Xft2 and Freetype, along with hinting in the fonts themselves.
The Font Software may be modified, altered, or added to, and in particular the designs of glyphs or characters in the Fonts may be modified and additional glyphs or characters may be added to the Fonts, only if the fonts are renamed to names not containing either the words “Bitstream” or the word “Vera”.
Bitstream is giving away these fonts, but wishes to ensure its competitors can't just drop the fonts as is into a font sale system and sell them as is. It seems fair that if Bitstream can't make money from the Bitstream Vera fonts, their competitors should not be able to do so either.

Typeface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A font, from Middle French fonte, meaning "(something that has been) melt(ed)" and referring to letters of a typeface produced by casting molten metal at a type foundry, consists of a set of glyphs (images) representing the characters from a particular character set in a particular typeface.
Digital fonts may encode the image of each character either as a bitmap (in a bitmap font) or by a higher-level description in terms of lines and curves enclosing a space (an outline font, also called a "vector font").
But of those websites that do specify a font, most use modern sans-serif fonts such as Verdana, because it is commonly believed that, in contrast to the case for printed material, sans-serif fonts are easier than serif fonts to read on computer screens due to their lower resolution.

Courier is a monospace font that resembles the output from a typewriter.
The design of the original Courier New typeface was commissioned in the 1950s by IBM for use in typewriters, but they did not secure legal exclusivity to the typeface and it was soon a standard font used throughout the typewriter industry.
As a monospaced font, it has recently found renewed use in the electronic world in situations where columns of characters must be consistently aligned.

NRJ Glossary - Monospace Font   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A monospace font, such as Courier, is one in which every character takes up the same amount of horizontal space.
Thus a thin "i" in a monospace font would have the same width, or pitch, as a fat "w." A font in which an "i" is relatively thinner than a "w" would be a proportional pitch font, such as Times.
Because monospace fonts have constant widths, they are often used to align tabular data into columns.

The core fonts (Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New) for Windows platforms were converted to Unicode even before Microsoft changed to the 16-bit WGL4 character set (652 characters) in place of the 8-bit ANSI character set (256 characters), and the numbers of characters in these fonts has continued to increase.
You need Unicode fonts to display many of the characters for which there are HTML 4.0 character entity references, and to display the Unicode test pages.
Many fonts contain a few characters from ranges that are not listed; for example WGL4 fonts only list the 5 main ranges, but the WGL4 characters are spread over 22 ranges.
