Monotyping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Monotyping (not to be confused with monoprinting) is a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface.
Monotypes can also be created by inking an entire surface and then, using brushes or rags, removing ink to create a subtractive image, creating lights from a field of opaque color.
Unlike monoprinting, monotyping produces a unique print, because most of the ink is removed during the initial pressing.

Cape Cod Fine Art Gallery : Sculptures, Glass, Oils, Monotypes, Mixed Media and More
A monotype is created on a glass plate in a similar way to a drawing on paper or an oil painting on paper.
The appeal of the monotype lies in the unique translucency that creates a quality of light very different from a painting on paper or a print, and the beauty of this media is also in its spontaneity and its combination of printmaking, painting and drawing mediums.
Monotype "ghost" prints, which are the print pulled from the plate once the primary image has been printed, can also be used to develop the image further.

Many viewers, first exposed to Eric Waldemar’s work through the fierce, obsessive intricacy of his large historical board game series, are surprised at the humor and reflective intimacy of his smaller paintings, drawings and prints, which actually make up the vast majority of his work.
As with his ink drawings, where the brush stroke is irrevokable, Waldemar’s methods of etching and monotyping tend to emphasize the “decisive moment” when pictorial space and image crystallize, without polishing and refining away the rough energy of the moment of discovery that gives these works their peculiar power.
These are images that linger, that return in dreams, that remind one of something one can’t quite place.

On Sept. 18, 2003, from 6- 8pm, sneak a peek behind the scenes at the Margaret Petterson Gallery in Charleston, SC, and join her for a night of casual conversation centered on monotypes, one of the native artist's favorite ways to capture her Lowcountry surroundings.
With demonstrations, a video, and QandA session, Petterson will show you how she pairs oil and watercolor to print one-of-a-kind works of art.
One of a handful of present-day area artists who delve into the ancient practice of monotyping, Petterson is actually part of a long-standing Lowcountry printmaking tradition with forebears such as Anna Heyward Taylor, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner and the 1920s Charleston Etchers' Club, whose members included Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, among others.
