This was an enormous county, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean.

Not surprisingly in the village, many people objected tot he appearance of the new poles and several were chopped down.
The village was one of the oldest settlements in Monroe County and was the first village after Rochesterville to incorporate.
We know that some of the early services provided by the village included a school, a constable and jail, plank sidewalks and crosswalks, the planting of trees, the cutting of excessive weed growth, and the grading of village streets.

Following the American Revolution, western New York was opened up for development as soon as New York and Massachusetts compromised and settled their competing claims for the area in December 1786 by the Treaty of Hartford.

In 1966, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf was added to the Rochester Institute of Technology, and, when the New York State Department of Public Works decided it would build the Inner Loop expressway through the downtown RIT campus, the decision was made to build a new campus in the suburbs.

The village (or the town, which are indistinguishable in old records) was the site of the hanging of the famous outlaw Claudius Smith,a British Loyalist who— along with the Mohawk Indian Chief Joseph Brandt— raided the countryside surrounding Goshen during the American Revolutionary War.

With fellow art students she created a series of banners that were hung along the sidewalk outside St. Paul's Chapel, an Episcopal church that had miraculously survived the attack though it was the oldest structure in Manhattan and just across the street from the trade center.
Her red-white-and-blue depiction of courage became the "mascot" of the banners, she said, and was the backdrop for numerous news conferences about the tragedy.
