Born in Giddings, Texas, Smith began his professional career in fl baseball's equivalent of the minor leagues with the Austin Black Senators in Austin, Texas.
His big league debut was with the Monroe Monarchs of Monroe, Louisiana in 1932, a year which saw the Monroe team lose to the Pittsburgh Crawfords in the Negro League World Series.
From 1937 until his retirement in 1948 Smith was a star pitcher on the Monarchs, possessing what may have been the best curveball in baseball history; but he was overshadowed by his more flamboyant teammate Satchel Paige.

At the start of this run the Monarchs acquired their most famous player, Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige, who had since his rookie season in 1927 built a reputation as the best hurler in fl baseball for the Birmingham Black Barons, Pittsburgh Crawfords, and several other teams.
Suffering from an arm injury and generally thought to be done, Paige joined the Monarchs' B team in 1939; by 1940 he had recovered and been called up to the Monarchs' main squad, where he became their top drawing card.
The Monarchs played their home games in the minor league Kansas City Blues' Association Park from 1920 to 1923, and moved to the Blues' new park, Muehlebach Field, in mid-1923.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, he began his professional baseball career in 1934 with the Monroe Monarchs, a minor Negro League team.
In 1936, he signed with the Kansas City Monarchs, for which he played continuously until seeing action in World War II in 1944-45.
He returned to the Monarchs for the 1948 season and stayed with the team until his retirement from top-level baseball in 1950.

A teammate of Satchel Paige's on the Kansas City Monarchs, Hilton Smith was best known for being Satchel's "relief." After Satchel pitched three innings, Hilton would come in and pitch the last six innings, with no appreciable difference in effectiveness.
During his twelve years with the Monarchs, playing against all competition, the right-handed hurler won 20 or more games each year, with his best years coming in 1939-1942, when he finished with records of 25-2, 21-3, 25-1 and 22-5.
His All-Star years coincided with the years of Monarch domination in the Negro American League, a period during which they own five pennants in the first six years of the league's existence.

In 1932, the Monarchs were proclaimed the top team in the South and they challenged the Pittsburgh Crawfords, the top team of the East, and considered one of the greatest teams in Negro League history.
