Monroe Township is governed under the Faulkner Act (Mayor-Council) system of municipal government.
Monroe Township was founded in 1838 and named in honor of the U.S. President James Monroe.
In the township the population is spread out with 16.0% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 16.3% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 43.5% who are 65 years of age or older.

HUMMELS WHARF — The Monroe Township supervisors Tuesday again delayed action on a request for a 3-mill tax increase to fund the Hummels Wharf Fire Company, despite a plea by a state official.
Township supervisor chairman Tim Wolfe and Fernsler dismissed that idea quickly.
The township has developed a proposed 2005 budget that includes $100,000 for the fire company, but Fire Chief Jeff Buckley said that won’t be enough to cover an estimated $130,000 a year in debt service to pay off loans for a new vehicle and building improvements.
