Monster (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Monster is R.E.M. 's ninth album, and their fourth major label release for Warner Bros., released in 1994.
After declining to tour for their last two albums, R.E.M. embarked on a long world tour in 1995, one which would see three of its members hospitalized and, from which, soundcheck recordings would form the basis for their next album, 1996's New Adventures in Hi-Fi.
The caption "For River" is a dedication to late actor River Phoenix, a friend of Michael Stipe's, who died of a drug overdose of cocaine and heroin on 31 October 1993.

R.E.M.'s new album Monster is a pleasant and surprising departure from their recent work in Automatic For the People and Out of Time.
Monster captures a wide range of emotions, without ever retreating to the self-indulgent and depressed mood that so deflated those albums.
Monster is enjoyable and intriguing, even outside of the context of such an interesting band as R.E.M. I rate the album four stars out of five.

 Monster - Music
Monster as you know is the most perfect and eloquent theme eever recorded by this group.
"Monster" is 9:16 and 9:56 on those two versions, which meant radio airplay was out of the question (even in the post "In-a-gadda-da-vida" period) except in a horribly cut down version that made it to #39 on the Billboard pop chart.
What "Monster" proves is that there was more to Steppenwolf than their place in music history as the group that recorded the ultimate "gas'n'go" anthem with "Born to Be Wild." But then the fact that this was a rock ground named after a Herman Hesse novel might have been a clue all by itself.

Monster Magnet has always been one of my favorite rock groups, and their last release, 2001’s “God Says No” was a complete letdown in my opinion.
I had heard that MM were going back to their roots, back to the brand of acid rock that made them so famous in the 90’s.
I think I expected an album that could be called “Powertrip #2” or something similar, but that’s what I get for reading ahead and forming my expectations prior to the release.

But the best thing about MONSTER is that in their quest not to repeat themselves, to push the envelope on their performance style--to change their sound--R.E.M. has dipped back into their roots and emerged with a truly classic rock album.
I think this album has to be isolated from their previous (and later) albums to be appreciated.
I guess that following on from such 'great' albums as 'Out of Time' and 'Automatic for the People' was an almost impossible task, and that anything other than the greatest album of the decade would have been a dissapointment, but I feel that 'Monster' showes REM at their most courageous.

Monster is indeed R.E.M. 's long-promised "rock" album; it just doesn't rock in the way one might expect.
Instead of R.E.M. 's trademark anthemic bashers, Monster offers a set of murky sludge, powered by the heavily distorted and delayed guitar of Peter Buck.
Monster doesn't have the conceptual unity or consistently brilliant songwriting of Automatic for the People, but it does offer a wide range of sonic textures that have never been heard on an R.E.M. album before.

MTV - Music - Artist - Monster Magnet
In the meantime, Monster Magnet had signed with independent label Caroline Records in 1992, and recorded their first full-length album: the very impressive, uniquely dark psychedelic masterpiece Spine of God.
By far the group's most straightforward hard rock album, Powertrip channeled all of Sin City's vice, greed, and sex into its hedonistic but surprisingly accessible tracks, and first single "Space Lord" went on to dominate rock radio that summer, driving the album over the gold sales plateau.
But, Monster Magnet duly reunited for a short North American tour in early 2002 and, a year later, a new deal with the German SPV label was announced.

Monster | music : ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
On its 11th-man, how time flies- album, Monster (Warner Bros.), the band plugs back in after two relatively subdued, largely acoustic albums (the filler-packed Out of Time and the almost churchly Automatic for the People) that touched on every sonic possibility except the jingle-jangle hymns of its first records.
Younger bands who were probably in high school when R.E.M. debuted continue to demonstrate the major role Michael Stipe has played in their lives, but Monster proves no one cranks the amplifiers and mumbles lyrics in quite the same thrilling way as the originators.
Monster reminds you how charged a band R.E.M. can be, but receiving only half its message is like having an intensely personal, confessional phone conversation with a friend on a cellular phone that keeps cutting in and out.

Most notably, the author incorrectly states that “the dominant instrument on the tape is an antiquated Moog synthesizer.” Aside from his perplexing use of the word “antiquated,” the driving sound he refers to is Ran's Casio keyboard.
Recorded on the eighth day of the eighth month of 1988, the Blanks Bean Monster Rituals is a tribute to the nonsensical silliness that seems to permeate much of the garage-rock genre of popular music.
Now, there's absolutely no way of knowing if there was any alcohol consumed during the recording sessions, but suffice it to say that at many points, the cassette sounds as though when the mikes were on and the tape was rolling, the band was partly there but partly somewhere else – an altered consciousness, perhaps.
