		New Jersey-native Dave Wyndorf was already a rock and roll veteran by the time he formed Monster Magnet in 1989, having cut his teeth with little-known punk band Shrapnel (also featuring future producer Daniel Rey on guitars) in the late '70s.

		To be honest, I bought the first Monster Magnet record by mistake - I got them mixed up with Bitch Magnet, an altogether different proposition - but when I gave it a spin it reawakened some long-dormant Hawkwind-loving nerve in me that the militant punkiness of the AmRep bands somehow didn't satisfy.
