RPGnet: Review of Monster Manual II
The new Monster Manual II is, at first glance on the shelf, a frightening tome.
With over 250 monsters in the Monster Manual II it would be a task far beyond my abilities to properly cover each one.
The Monster Manual II surprised me. Upon first opening the book I expected to be disappointed by the selection of monsters.

 Later AD&D Manuals
Monster Manual II is (surprise) the sequel to the Monster Manual.
Published in 1983, the Monster Manual II heralded the re-design of all the ADandD manuals to this style (though Fiend Folio was not reprinted after roughly 1982, so it escaped the redesign).
Monster Manual II First (1983): Preface and Acknowledgement boxes (on page 4) are shaded in gray, making the text inside somewhat hard to read.

 Monster Manual II
This supplement for the DandD game unleashes a horde of monsters to confront characters at all levels of play, including several with Challenge Ratings of 21 or higher.
Inside are old favorites such as the death knight and the gem dragons, as well as all-new creatures such as the bronze serpent, the effigy, and the fiendwurm.
Along with updated and expanded monster creation rules, Monster Manual II provides an inexhaustible source of ways to keep even the toughest heroes fighting and running for their lives.

RPGnet: Review of Monster Manual II
The Monster Manual II is a legacy of gaming reinventing itself for those new to the whole DandD mystique.
Not many fresh-face 3ers will know that the Monster Manual II was first released in 1983, collecting creatures that had appeared in various modules and magazine articles at the time.
Did the Monster Manual II beat the Monster Manual in my grand scheme of monster book comparisons, sadly no. Both books are too alike to be honest, each does the "here's the monster" job, but doesn't back anything else up with them, as did the Monsters of Faerûn.

Of other things in the manual, some feats and better explanations of immunities were among the stuff that I missed in the old manual.
The 3.0 d20 Monster Manual was nothing special to me, it was missing a few factors that would have made it all the more special, this book finally ammend for this and includes all of what I thought was missing from the original d20 MM.

This book is very useful and increases the variety of monsters available in your D&D games, containing the same amount of monsters as the first Monster Manual.
The content of this book is essentially similar to the Monster Manual already released, although the emphasis is more geared towards high level play.

I have used monsters from all 3, but consider the FF to be the weakest of the 3 except for a few monsters.
Each (except the giant, I suppose) was a monster placed to some specific purpose in the dungeon and worked so well I didn't have to tweak their stats in any way.

At long last, the second Monster Manual has appeared, to give DMs and players more opponents and allies for their D&D3 games.
There are a few monsters that have appeared in other 3e media...like the Legendary animals, first appearing in Masters of the wild, and the catoblepas, which just appeared in Dragon in September's issue (and is, itself, an update from earlier editions).
When I first got the book in the mail I was a TINY bit disappointed in the size, expecting a book the size of the Monster Manual 1, but when I looked through I was presently surprised.

The authors explain the creature abilities, special abilities, attack routines, and monster advancement in a much more clear and concise way than MM 1.
Yes I know it's hard to make a monster that challenges a high-level group, but it doesn't have to be a construct!

They are not based on any historical myth to my knowledge, they aren't carry-overs from previous editions (Monster Manual, Monster Manual II, or Fiend Folio), and they aren't related to Greyhawk.
Notably, most of the entries are from the original first editon Monster Manual, with a few entries from the MMII and the Fiend Folio.
I don't care for the practice of separating illustrations from the text entry as have been done for some creatures, although, admittedly, this is primarily limited to groupings of related monsters.

On a side note, I am almost certain that quite a few of these monsters were initially created as the product of one of the old 1e monster generator tables, and the designers just used that as a springboard.
I agree with your comments about the MMII monsters (the braxat seems at home on Dark Sun but in a generic product it does indeed seem like it was randomly generated).

About the publishing of this print (the first hardback RPG manual ever printed), again from Gygax: "It was no problem finding a printer that could do a stitched binding and school-book cover material, as I wanted the ADandD volumes to be as nearly indestructible as could be managed.
Most of the errata mentioned on the sheet were corrected with the Second print, so we surmise it was released sometime between Dec 1977 and May 1978.
