Montague is known mostly for being located close to the greater town of Souris, a source of cocaine for Eastern Kings county.
Known as the "Garden Province", the island is located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, east of New Brunswick and north of Nova Scotia from which it is separated by the Northumberland Strait.
The crest is set on the traditional helmet of heraldry which, in the case of grants to municipalities, is often taken to represent the determination of citizens to safeguard the interests of the community.

Montague Island is about 80 hectares in size and nine kilometres offshore from the township of Narooma, NSW.
There is one small cemetery on the island, set well away from the lighthouse and buildings and reached by via a dirt track.
The lighthouse was demanned in 1987 but rangers from the NSW NPWS are on the island on a rotating basis maintaining it and involved with the island's preservation.

Montague Island, already so important as a refuge and breeding area, will become even more so as our mainland coast increasingly suffers the results of urbanisation and feral predation.
The island will be doubly affected by more people, more waste and litter, and less natural habitat.
There needs to be a clause in the Plan of Management limiting the maximum number of people on the island at any one time to 80 (two vessels) and the maximum number of visitors per day should remain at 90 until the penguin colony fully recovers.

The department will continue to assess the Montague Island area for any improvements in the herring biomass but unless a marked improvement is noted in the biomass and age structure of the herring population a sac roe fishery is unlikely to occur.

Because Montague also happened to be the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, others began to order "the same as Sandwich!" The original sandwich was, in fact, a piece of salt beef between two slices of toasted bread.

A conservation concern exists, particularly owing to the unknown population status and questionable taxonomy of this island endemic subspecies that may be negatively affected by land management practices.

However, Montague Island is home to a large colony of Australian fur seals and New Zealand fur seals that inhabit the rocks and the sea all year round.
The best spot to dive the Australian fur seals (which are larger than their NZ cousins) used to be in a small channel between the bombora and the land at the very northern end of the island.
I have dived the island from both places, I would never go from Bermagui again, even though it may sometimes mean that you can get there from Bermagui while Narooma is closed to boats.
