The Precambrian rocks of Montana may be divided into two units, an older pre-Belt unit of metamorphic and intrusive rocks and a thick overlying unit of sedimentary rocks known as the Belt series.
The spectacular alpine scenery of western Montana is the result of glaciation, and the stream pattern, waterpower potential, and suitability of the land for agriculture--all have been profoundly affected by glacial activity.
In southwestern Montana deposits of talc, corundum, iron ore, graphite, sillimanite, and kyanite are found in Precambrian rocks of the Cherry Creek Group, and large deposits of chromite are found in the Precambrian Stillwater Complex in Stillwater and Sweet Grass Counties.

HELENA (AP) -- British Columbia is persisting with its sale of coal-bed methane leases north of Glacier National Park despite Gov. Judy Martz's appeal for Canadian federal officials to halt the effort, a provincial official said Tuesday.
Martz said Montana is concerned the potential coal-bed methane activity would jeopardize water quality in the Flathead River system, which flows into Montana from British Columbia.
"Montana's request is exactly in line with the precautionary approach that we have been advocating since we first learned of this assault on this very special part of North America," said Ted Ralfe, spokesman for the group.

Using a geology-based assessment methodology, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated a mean of 8.6 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered natural gas, a mean of 109 million barrels of undiscovered oil, and a mean of 240 million barrels of natural gas liquids in the Montana Thrust Belt Province of northwestern Montana.
The assessment of the Montana Thrust Belt Province is based on the geologic elements of each Total Petroleum System defi ned in the province, including hydrocarbon source rocks (source-rock maturation, hydrocarbon generation and migration), reservoir rocks (sequence stratigraphy and petrophysical properties), and hydrocarbon traps (trap formation and timing).
Nearly all (99 percent) of the undiscovered gas resource is conventional, whereas about 75 percent of the undiscovered oil resource is conventional (table 1).
