Transactions and Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute, 1911 [electronic resource]
Montan wax is a hard yellowish material which, on account of its high melting-point, is used for raising the melting-point of stearine candles, and, on account of its low price, has also found some use as an adulterant of beeswax.
Montanic acid, the acid of intermediate molecular weight, was isolated by conversion of the crude acid into its ethyl salt, and subsequent distillation under reduced pressure.
Hitherto cerotic and montanic acids have been described as crystallizing in needles; and the crude acids certainly do so, but the pure acids crystallize in scales, and in so doing resemble all the lower members of the higher fatty acids which have been obtained in a state of purity.

Transactions and Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute, 1911 [electronic resource]
Although the method of fractional precipitation did not yield montanic acid in a state of purity, yet by fractional distillation of the ethyl ester of the crude acid under diminished pressure purity was at last attained.
The montanic acid purified by this process crystallized in plates, and was readily soluble in hot ethyl acetate or motor spirit, and fairly soluble in hot alcohol and acetic acid.
) Crude montanic acid is a mixture of cerotic, montanic, and melissic acids.

 STEARIC ACID
Fatty acids are predominantly unbranched and those with even numbers of carbon atoms between 12 and 22 carbons long react with glycerol to form lipids (fat-soluble components of living cells) in plants, animals, and microorganisms.
The saturated fatty acids have no double bonds, while oleic acid is an unsaturated fatty acid has one double bond (also described as olefinic) and polyunsaturated fatty acids like linolenic acid contain two or more double bonds.
Fatty acids and glycerol are produced by hydrolysis (addition reaction of water molecule with cleavage of parent molecules) of the triglycerides.

Triglyceride and wax ester oils can be squeezed out of seeds using a turning screw that presses the mashed up seed against a metal barrel with slits in the side.
The methyl ester formed by the reaction, if not distilled, is still referred to by the oil name (for example methyl cocoate).
Distillation is a major operation used to fractionate the methyl ester mixture gotten from oils into specific defined methyl esters having the desired alkyl groups.

 Powdery graft-copolymer composition
These graft-copolymers are prepared through emulsion polymerization, and the latex obtained is coagulated with an acid or a salt, and then dehydrated and dried to obtain a powder.
To the elastomeric trunk polymer latex thus obtained, 0.065 part of dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate and then 30 parts of 0.2% hydrochloric acid were added, whereupon the average particle size of the latex was increased to about 0.15.mu..
As the particle size of the coagulated elastomeric trunk polymer latex was increased (due to an increased quantity of a coagulant), the powder characteristics, particularly anti-blocking property, of the graft-copolymer obtained was improved slightly and not yet significantly.
