Before the arrival of the Europeans the Montauks (or Montauketts, the seventeenth-century spelling revived by tribal members in the 1990s) located their villages along the banks of freshwater streams and tidal bays in the coastal areas on the southern fork of eastern Long Island in what is now the state of New York.
Montauk leaders complained about the abuses to the New York State Assembly in 1806 and 1811, and to the State Supreme Court in 1870, but the state declined to take any action.
The Montauks appealed the case and fought an unsuccessful eight-year battle in the courts.

USS Montauk, a 1335-ton Passaic class monitor built at Greenpoint, New York, was commissioned in December 1862 under the command of Commander John L.
At the end of February, Montauk returned to Ft. McAllister to shell and destroy the Confederate privateer Rattlesnake and early in the next month covered another bombardment of the fort by three of her sister monitors.
On 7 April 1863, Montauk was one of nine ironclads, including seven monitors, that made a close-range bombardment of Fort Sumter, in Charleston harbor, S.C. During the summer of that year, she participated in a series of attacks on the Charleston harbor fortifications that led to the capture of Battery Wagner in September.

Montauk produced some nice bass during this period into summer but many old timers thought this early season in Montauk was not up to its normal numbers of fish seen and caught in previous years.
Bluefish in good numbers are starting to hammer bait in Montauk and as I write this report (August 27), large false albacore have been sighted and fished to at Montauk.
Montauk should remain great for striped bass and Gardiners should really turn on this summer with lots of bluefish.

Thanks to all the participants in The Montauk Century 2005 - the organizers, the volunteers, and, most of all, the riders - for making our ride enjoyable, and for getting all of us and our bikes home despite the best efforts of the LIRR (are they related to the SI Ferry?).
The three of them were able to catch the train from Montauk Sunday morning with their bikes and join the other 65 milers at Shirley Mastic.
The feeling I remember from past Montauks is that arriving back in Manhattan late at night and claiming your bike and riding home feels somewhat surreal, kind of like the twilight zone.
