The Battle of Monte Cassino (also known as the Battle for Rome and the Battle for Cassino) was a costly series of battles in World War II, fought by the Allies with the intention of breaking through the Gustav Line and seizing Rome.
The Fourth Battle of Monte Cassino was fought mainly by the 2nd Polish Corps (3rd and 5th Division) under General Władysław Anders (May 11–May 19) and elements of the 4th Indian Division of the British Army.
Immediately after the cessation of fighting at Monte Cassino, the Polish government in Exile (in London) created the Monte Cassino campaign cross to commemorate the Polish part in the capture of the strategic point.

Monte Cassino is a rocky hill about eighty miles (130 km) south of Rome, Italy, a mile to the west of the town of Cassino (the Roman Cassinum having been on the hill) and 520 m (1700 ft) altitude.
A flourishing period of Monte Cassino followed its re-establishment in 718, when among the monks were Carloman, the son of Charles Martel; Ratchis, predecessor of the great Lombard Duke and King Astolf; and Paul the Deacon, the historian of the Lombards.
In 1321, Pope John XXII made the church of Monte Cassino a cathedral, and the carefully preserved independence of the monastery from episcopal interference was at an end.

I've been reading The Battle of Cassino by Fred Majdalany, who fought in the battle as an infantry officer.
He's a good writer and has a nice grasp of the issues surrounding Cassino, Anzio, the Rapido River crossing, and some of the other difficult bits of American battle history that occurred during the largely ignored Italian theater during WWII.
The story of battle of Monte Cassino is one of great tragedy for the order of monks who still live there, but they draw enormous inspiration from one part of the tale.
