Monte Perdido (Mont Perdu in French, both meaning lost mountain) is the third highest mountain in the Pyrenees.
The summit of Monte Perdido (3355m), located in Spain, lies hidden from France by the seemingly impenetrable peaks of the Cirques of Gavarnie and Estaube.
Monte Perdido is the centrepiece of the Spanish Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido which was established in 1918 with just 21 square kilometres of land.

Monte Perdido is the highest limestone mountain in Western Europe.
Having done Mont Blanc recently I knew that Monte Perdido would be a piece of cake and we revived the plan to hike it.

One day at the turn of the century, while looking down from the summit of Monte Perdido, he decided to go down and investigate the great sickle-shaped depression, which had been scooped out of the calcareous bedrock by Quaternary glaciation.
Monte Perdido is the highest of the three high mountains known as Las Tres Sorores ('the three sisters') that dominate the park; the other two are El Cilindro de Marbore (3,328 metres/l0,920 feet) and El Sum de Ramond (3,262 metres/10,700 feet).
Ordesa has one of Europe's largest populations of chamois, but the Spanish ibex, or cabra montés, which the park was intended to protect, has not done nearly as well: there are said to be no more than 15 ibex in the park these days.

Cerler, officially called Aramón Cerler, is a ski resort situated in the high Benasque Valley, near the town of Benasque in the central Pyrenees (province of Huesca, Spain).

It has 60 km of marked pistes, and it's one of the highest resorts of the Pyrenees.

The Monte Perdido National Park, north of Ainsa, is probably one of the most spectacular and vibrant parks in the country.
We hiked in the park to visit the famous “Gavarnie nappe”, possibly the first thrust described in any orogenic belt (L. Ramond, in 1801, noticed Cretaceous limestones beneath Paleozoic rocks, a feature that was difficult to reconcile with the prevailing idea of "neptunism" of that time!).
Along with the Spanish group we visited the south segment of the ECORS profile, from Balaguer (southernmost Pyrenean deformation front) to Pobla de Segur, where we studied Paleozoic rocks that were involved in antiformal stacks.
