Monteiro Lobato was probably the central figure in the growth of the book industry in Brazil and the first publisher in Brazil to attempt to develop a mass market for books and to develop the book industry as a consumer industry.
Lobato was a major public figure in Brazil from 1918 to 1927 as, in addition to the success of these two books, he wrote a regular column for the influential newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, and bought the middle-brow journal, Revista do Brasil.
Lobato was puzzled by the language used in the Brazilian translations published by the French-owned house, Garnier, and remarked "Temos que refazer tudo isso - abrasileirar a linguagem" (Koshiyama:88), and he recommended that the translator Godofredo Rangel took the liberty of improving the original where necessary.

Lobato also was the first one to assemble two great publishing companies - the National Publishing Company and "Brasiliense" - and was the first to massively print books in Brazil, looking for ways to make books cheaper, so that everybody could read.

Lobato writes: “The macaw's crest of feathers into a straw hat turned, pulled down on the forehead; the open space in the forest into a thatched hut; the native Indian club tapering thin, a trigger created, set ear to ground and today rifle touts...” - and the enumeration with its modern-day equivalent thus goes on.
Lobato forgot that he - and other landowning friends — were the true parasites of the ancestors of the current live-in servants, as they had been of the fl slaves.

In all of Monteiro Lobato's children books, the central characters are the same: two kids---a boy and a girl, their grandmother, and a couple of dolls that (like the tiger Hobbes in Calvin's comics) are "naturally" alive in the kids' eyes.
Indeed, Lobato is one of those precious few writers who do not put themselves above the readers, but converse with them as equals, in a simple and straightforward language.

Monteiro Lobato, upset with indignation, but in tune with the future and aware of children’s intelligence and capabilities, has given his best to this child-reader: his irreverent humor, his touching stories, his prodding knowledge, his unpredictable characters, his fantastic blend of the real and the imaginary, his belief in freedom.

An excellent example of such an agent is Monteiro Lobato, the most important force in the development of the Brazilian publishing industry.
In the 1920s and 1930s his publishing companies were the leading producer of books in Brazil, introducing a more modern mentality to the book industry, translating and ordering translations from languages other than the dominant French, particularly children’s literature, mainly translated and adapted from English, and he also wrote his own books for children.
Both are also central figures in the cultural development of their countries: Lobato helped to give impetus to the growing importance of English, which would finally dislodge French as the major foreign language in Brazil after the Second World War, and Yücel played a major role in the secularization of the Turkish state.
