Montereau was in the beginning of the 15th century a place of some importance.
In 1438 the town was captured by Charles VII., and during the wars of religion it was several times taken and retaken.
In 1814 Napoleon gained a victory at Montereau over the Wurttemberg troops under Schwarzenberg, and in memory of this his statue has been erected on the bridge.

The architect of the Sainte-Chapelle was Pierre de Montereau, the same who built the famous Virgin's Chapel of the abbey of Saint-Germaindes-Pres.
Of these marvellous and magnificent windows which form the chief interest of the interior, there are fifteen-four, wide and high, fill as many bays each side of the big parallelogram, seven enclose its apse, the narrower bays unfolding in a half-circle like an open fan.
Nothing is left but a corridor to show for the three-story construction built by Montereau as an annex to the apse, which had the honour to house one of the first public libraries of Europe.

My favourites area is from Montereau onwards here the Seine takes on a wilder aspect and has numerous gravel pits running parallel, that are havens for big fish.
The Power station at Nogent is a renouned big fish haunt and has the advantage of fishing well in winter due to the warm water being pumped into the river.
