This collection, consisting of ex-cerpts from the sets of 20 of the 31 artists who appeared at the festival, is an effective collection of concert highlights--including some of the more memorable performances offered on stage, but it falls short as a complete historical documentary of the event.
And the Monterey International Pop Festival was important enough to be represented in its entirety, or at least representative of all of the artists whose motto, Music, Love and Flowers, has carried on for two decades.

Just as the Monterey and Woodstock Festivals were decidedly different affairs, the films are a study in contrasting style, despite the similar subject matter and general filming technique.
The Who, for all their festival appearances, never seemed to take too keenly to the whole “flower power” scene, and their apocalyptic set reinforces that notion; they seem to revel in providing a bit of wanton destruction to shock the peace-and-love crowd out of its dope-induced mellow.

Simply put, this DVD set is a must have for everyone that loves rock and roll, and there should be a law that every library in America should have a copy of this available to the public, and it should be mandatory viewing for all high school students.
Imagine a film of many of the best rock and pop acts of the 1960s performing at or near their peak smack in the middle of 1967's fabled Summer Of Love.
"Monterey Pop" should be required viewing--far more than "Woodstock", that's for sure--for anyone interested in what the 60s was really all about.
