New Mexico - Aztec Ruins National Monument
Like Montezuma Castle in Arizona, the Aztec Ruins were mistakenly thought by early white explorers to be relics of the great 15th century central Mexican civilisation though as with most other ancient settlements of the Southwest they actually date from around the 12th century and were built by tribes indigenous to this region.
Location: The monument is just 2 miles from the centre of Aztec, a bustling town near Farmington in the far northwest of New Mexico, and close to the busy US 550 that leads to Durango in Colorado.
The village became ruined, slowly covered by the desert sands and remained unvisited until the mid nineteenth century - the first known rediscovery was in 1859.

Arizona - Casa Grande Ruins National Monument
Casa Grande Ruins National Monument contains an imposing 4-storey building dating from the late Hohokam period, probably 14th century and contemporary with other preserved ruins in Arizona such as the Tonto and Montezuma Castle Monuments.
It is believed that the Casa Grande was a kind of astronomical observatory as the four walls face the points of the compass, and some of the windows are aligned to the positions of the sun and moon at specific times.
A door at the back of the centre leads to the Casa Grande itself, at the middle of a rectangular area that used to be a walled compound containing several other smaller buildings.
