		A member of this family, Roger of Montgomery, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, founded the town and castle of Montgomery in Wales, later the county town of Montgomeryshire.
		Montgomery was a town in Alberta that was annexed by the city of Calgary in 1963.

		Originally the county town of Montgomeryshire (now part of Powys), Montgomery has a population of around 1200 and is one of the most attractive towns in Wales.
		Montgomery was sacked at the beginning of the 15th century by the rebel Welsh prince Owain Glyn Dwr (Owen Glendower), the castle being at the time under the control of the Mortimer family (the hereditary Earls of March).
		Montgomery was for some time the administrative centre for the old county of Montgomeryshire and hence has many old and interesting buildings in the town including an old gaol and a fine market square, the houses around which appear to be Georgian in style, but are in fact often much older with Georgian facades.

		hortly after the Norman Conquest the conqueror's kinsman Roger de Montgomery, who had been left in Normandy as co-regent with the Duchess, received large tracts of territory both in Sussex and Shropshire and was created Earl of Shrewsbury, where the castle already established by the Conqueror by 1069 became its principal seat.
		It was during Hugh's tenure that the castle was sacked in 1095 by Cadwgan ap Bleddyn, Prince of Powys.
		The sale was confirmed by King John who, however, handed the lordship to Gwenwynwyn, Prince of Powys, in 1216; but he was almost immediately driven out by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, Prince of Gwynedd.
