Montgomery Bell, early Tennessee industrialist and ironmaster, was born in West Fellowfield Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, the youngest of ten children, to John Bell and Mary Patterson (spelled by some members of the family as "Pattison").
Bell was well into his seventies by the 1840s, and his iron manufacturing activities declined substantially after that.
Bell's will provided for twenty thousand dollars to be used for the establishment of a school for boys to be located in Nashville and one thousand dollars for the First Presbyterian Church in Nashville.

MBA was established in the 1867 in the aftermath of the American Civil War.
The school is named in honor of Montgomery Bell, a Pennsylvania native who made his fortune as the early 19th century "ironmaster" of Middle Tennessee and whose will endowed it, with the stipulation that it forever be an all-male institution.
MBA also has extensive exchange links with other boys' schools throughout the English-speaking world; arrangements are in place with Eton College and Winchester College in England, Kearsney College and Michaelhouse in South Africa, and The Southport School and The King's School in Australia.
