It has been described as the last trunk canal route to be built in England, being completed in 1835, and it was the last major civil engineering accomplishment of Thomas Telford.
Most of the canal (the stretch south of the Cheshire town of Nantwich) was originally constructed as the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal.
At Nantwich, it links with what was then known as the Chester Canal; north of Chester, the route to the Mersey was completed by the northern extremity of the Ellesmere Canal.

A blueprint for the full restoration of the Montgomery Canal is to be launched at the National Assembly for Wales and the House of Commons this week.
The publication of the document Montgomery Canal: Regeneration through Sustainable Development is a major milestone in the 40 year campaign to restore the canal, which will bring huge economic and leisure benefits to local communities.
The canal is currently open to navigation from its junction with the Llangollen Canal at Frankton Locks, near Oswestry, to Gronwen, just south of Maesbury, a length of around seven miles.

Maesbury Marsh The Canal was authorised in 1793 and by 1797 26 km had been built from Llanymynech to Garthmyl, but stopping 11 km short of Newtown.
With shareholders fearing they might lose their investment if the Canal were completed, a separate Company was set up to build the remainder of the Canal through to Newtown, the work being completed in 1821: this part was known as the Western Branch of the Montgomeryshire, the original section being known as the Eastern Branch.
In 1936 a breach ocurred near Frankton Junction and the decision was taken to abandon the canal.
