The county was named for its largest community, the town of Montgomery, Texas, which in turn was named for Andrew Montgomery, a settler who founded the town.
In the county, the population is spread out with 29.50% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 30.60% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 8.70% who are 65 years of age or older.

Montgomery County Precinct 4 Commissioner Ed Rinehart is the focus of a Texas Ethics Commission complaint accusing him of violating three statutes under the Election Code related to campaign funds.
He said Rinehart has flip-flopped on issues such as banning certain children's books from the county libraries and on a proposal for a new landfill in east Montgomery County.
Section 254.031 of the Election Code states that the amount of political expenditures greater than $50 must be documented, including the full name and address of the persons to whom the expenditures are made, and the dates and purposes of the expenditures.
