County, in east central Georgia, is the state's twentieth county.
In 1877 a portion of the county was returned to Telfair, and more of the county's land later went to the creation of Dodge (1870), Emanuel (1812), Tattnall (1801), Toombs (1905), Treutlen (1918), and Wheeler (1912) counties, leaving Montgomery County with its current 245 square miles.
According to the 2000 U.S. census, the population of Montgomery County was 8,270 (69.7 percent white, 27.2 percent fl, and 3.3 percent Hispanic), a 12.1 percent increase since 1990.

This is a letter dated October 11, 1799 from Timothy Barnard, an Indian trader who lived amongst the Cusseta Indians, to Captain Span or Captain (John?) Swelley in Montgomery County, Georgia.
Barnard closes the letter by stating that he is confident that the Indian chiefs in the area are indeed determined to stop the stealing, but he cautions white settlers to guard against the practice as a precaution.
