Monticello Township, once a key part of north-central Johnson County with a 149-year history and historical links to Wild Bill Hickock and “Bloody Kansas,” was disorganized Thursday, January 26, as a part of Johnson County.
The original township staked its claim on the Johnson County territory between the Kansas River as its northern end and its southern boundary at roughly 103rd Street and between Moonlight Road as its western border and Ridgeview Road as its eastern edge.
Monticello Township and Johnson County also had their dark days during the unrest of “Bloody Kansas” with the struggle between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions.
