Montjuc The site of the 1992 Olympics, the Montjuc park offers excellent public sporting facilities like the swimming pools at Piscinas Picornell, tennis courts and walking trails as well as the Olympic stadium, now home to the Espanyol football club.
On the summit the Castell de Montjuc, a fortress built at the end of the 17th century on the site of the ancient Jewish cemetery, is now home to the Military Museum.
When the World Fair was held in Barcelona in 1929, the mountain was remodelled and numerous museums and galleries dot the verdant gardens on the hillside most notably the Poble Espanyol, the re-creation of a composite Spanish village.

We got up a little earlier to lazy winter sunshine and indulged in a cafe breakfast before walking over to Montjuc, a hilly park area that dominates the southwest corner of the city.
After a quick lunch there, we popped over to the nearby Olympic Annex, which must have been glorious in the summer of 1992, but actually looked quite sad and depressing on a winter afternoon ten years later - vast plazas and handsome spaces, devoid of any people or character.
From Montjuc, it's a long sloping walk down to Barcelona's waterfront, which was really crowded and filled with quite tacky tourist traps, stores and cinemas.
