Washington State Route 520 cuts through the northern tip of Montlake, isolating four blocks from the rest of the neighborhood.
Montlake saw a spike in housing prices and the demolition or renovation of several smaller homes starting in the late 1980s, as tech-boom babies bought up properties in the neighborhood because of its charm, good schools, and central location.
The neighborhood's main thoroughfares are Boyer Avenue E. (northwest- and southeast-bound), 24th Avenue E. and Lake Washington and Montlake Boulevards E. (north- and southbound), and E. Lake Washington Boulevard (east- and westbound).

Montlake is an affluent residential neighborhood in central Seattle.
In 1916, the northern boundary of Montlake was fixed by the opening of the New Portage Canal, later known as the Montlake Cut, between Lake Washington and Lake Union.
Montlake is also the current home of the Museum of History and Industry (1952) as well as the Seattle Yacht Club (1920) and the Montlake Fisheries Laboratory (1931), a National Marine Fisheries Service lab.

Montlake Montlake is a generally quiet neighborhood in central Seattle.

In 1986, the state ferries began passenger-only runs between Seattle and Bremerton, using the 270-passenger Tyee, which was sold to Aqua Express and is now being used on the privately operated passenger-ferry route between Kingston and Seattle.
In 1989, the Port of Seattle studied the idea of passenger ferries on Lake Washington and concluded that dedicated shuttle buses to the ferry terminal would be needed and that the fares should cover the operating costs.
The West Seattle water taxi does not pay for itself, Gleason said, and has a subsidy similar to what the buses have: About 25 percent of the cost of running the service is covered by fares.

In 1860, Harvey L. Pike dug a shallow ditch at the present Montlake Cut to permit the passage of logs from Lake Washington to the lower waters of Portage Bay.
The Washington State Legislature endorsed the northern route in 1900 and the federal government began deepening the channel leading from Shilshole Bay to the Ballard wharves in 1906.
