 Montlake History by Jim Gould
Geographically Montlake is situated at the natural crossroads north of the center of Seattle, where any path leading north must pass the narrow isthmus between Lake Washington and Lake Union, and at the easiest east to west passage between the lakes must go.
Known as the Montlake area since 1909, the boundaries are roughly the Montlake Cut (with University beyond) at the north, the Arboretum (with Broadmoor beyond) to the east, Interlaken (with Capitol Hill beyond) south and south west, and Portage Bay and "Five Corners" (Roanoke beyond) to the west.
Montlake is renowned for its ability to rally civic support, but its greatest defeat was at the hands of the interstate highway system.

Lake Washington Ship Canal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Lake Washington Ship Canal, which runs through Seattle, Washington connecting Lake Washington to Puget Sound, is a system consisting of, from east to west, Union Bay, the Montlake Cut, Portage Bay, Lake Union, the Fremont Cut, Salmon Bay, the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, and Shilshole Bay.
In 1916 the water level of Lake Washington dropped by nearly nine feet when the Montlake Cut was completed, replacing the Black River as the lake's outlet in favor of Portage Bay and Lake Union.
With the opening of the Locks on May 8, 1917, there was finally a navigable passage from the lake to the sound.

Montlake: Area's central location has sizzling appeal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Longtime Montlake residents refer to the escalating prices of neighborhood homes with words like "unbelievable" and "ridiculous." The prices have gone so high -- more than $250,000 for a bare-bones, two-bedroom, bungalow fixer-upper -- that Montlake's unofficial status as the prime UW professor enclave is seriously imperiled, if not already extinct.
The trend is especially evident in the most northern portion of Montlake called "The Cut," those few blocks of most desirable homes sandwiched between the Montlake Cut and 520.
Yet even the most well-heeled newcomers with jobs on the Eastside still seem to succumb to the mindset that has marked Montlake residents for decades: a fierce protectiveness about their neighborhood that leads to bitter civic battles over any major changes.
