Montreal Amateur Athletic Association is an athletic association located in the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
It was renamed as the Club Sportif MAA or just MAA (Montreal MAA) in 1999 after a brush with bankruptcy, but is still widely known as the MAAA.
The current clubhouse was opened in 1905, on Peel Street in downtown Montreal, in the current commercial district.

With the exception of 1888, the challenge system was exclusively used in the AHA before the advent of the Stanley Cup, while the series system became the norm in 1893, the first year the Cup was contested.
In 1893, the first year since 1888 where the AHA played under a series system, the Montreal AAA lost their first game against the Ottawa Hockey Club, and proceeded to win their next seven en route to the championship.
The Stanley Cup, as it would later be known, would be presented to the Montreal AAA on May 15, 1893, as its initial champions.

The Cup was originally presented in 1893 to the Montreal AAA, the champion of the Amateur Hockey Association, the top hockey league of Canada at the time.
A month later, the AAA would finish third in the CAHL standings with the top two teams tied in the standings, and thus the Stanley Cup champions was determined from a two-game totals affair between the Montreal Victorias and the Ottawa Silver Seven.
The 1909 saw the departure of the Montreal AAA and the Montreal Victorias, the two remaining amateur teams, from the ECAHA, and thus the ECAHA dropped the "Amateur" from their name, becoming an all-pro league.

Successful as a member of the Montreal Young Crystals in the late 1890s, Boon earned a spot as a defenseman on the famous Montreal Amateur Athletic Association team beginning with the 1899-1900 season.
In 1902, Boon and his Montreal AAA squad won the Stanley Cup championship against the Winnipeg Victorias in a stunning final-game victory, which led to the nickname "The Little Men of Iron" for the smallish team.
But when the Montreal Wanderers were formed to begin play in the 1903-04 season, many of the Montreal AAA players, Boon included, were persuaded to join the new team.

Desperate to win a Cup for Lord Stanley (who lived in Ottawa at the time) the Generals faced off against the Montreal AAA on March 22, 1894 in what is considered the first Stanley Cup Finals game ever played.
The Generals would not challenge for the Stanley Cup for 10 years as their 1901 CAHL Championship was too late in the year to put a challenge in for the Cup.
