But the Toronto Arenas ran into difficulties, and withdrew late in the season, reducing the NHL to just two clubs -- the Canadiens, and the Senators -- who played a best-of-seven final, which was won by the Canadiens.
Montreal was granted another franchise, named the Maroons, and Boston was granted a franchise, known as the Bruins.

 Montreal Wanderers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Montreal Wanderers were a professional hockey team that played in Montreal, Quebec and was one of the founding franchises of the National Hockey League in the 1917-18 NHL season.
They played only six games in the NHL's, inaugural season and lost all but one, when their home rink, the Montreal Arena burned down on January 2, 1918, and the team was disbanded.
Prior to the formation of the NHL, they played in the Federal Amateur Hockey League from 1903-05, the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association from 1906-09, and the National Hockey Association from 1909-17.

In Canada, the Ottawa Senators built their arena with their own money, and then were forced to pay, in full, the price of the connecting on-ramps for vehicles to enter the arena.
The Montreal Canadiens funded construction of the Molson Centre on their own but because the arena is located downtown, they were forced to pay the city several million dollars in lost parking meter revenue due to the disturbance as a result of the construction.

When the governors of the NHA got together in Montreal on Nov. 10, 1917, they announced the league would suspend operations for the upcoming season.
While the public was led to believe pro hockey would be spending the next season on the bench, the owners of the Ottawa and Quebec franchises, and the two Montreal clubs held a second meeting, welcoming a new group from Toronto.
What the public later learned was that the real reason the NHA was suspending play was to get rid of Toronto Arena's owner Eddie Livingstone, said to be pompous and flamboyant and a man the other owners couldn't stand.
