While the Montreal Canadiens drew primarily francophone fans, the Maroons largely drew fans from the anglophone neighbourhoods of Montreal.
The Montreal Canadiens came under ownership of the Canadian Arena Company in 1935 and with two Montreal teams under ownership of the same company and not drawing well, more and more it was debated that Montreal might best be served with only one NHL franchise only.
The Maroons participated in the longest NHL playoff game of all time, losing 1-0 to the Detroit Red Wings in 176:30 of play (16:30 of the sixth overtime period) on March 24-25, 1936.

The Forum was built for the Maroons as we all know, though because of a cancellation the Canadiens ended up playing the first game there.
They used to be situated in NDG before merging with the Ville-Emard Hurricanes to become the Montreal Hurons (not a good team name to have when playing against a first nations team lemme tell ya).
