The city of Montreal, located in the Canadian province of Quebec, first hosted a baseball team in an organized league in 1890, serving as a mid-season waystation for two different teams in the prestigious International Association.
After the season, The Sporting News named Hopper Minor League Manager of the Year, stating that "much of the success of the Royals was attributed to his tactful guidance, skillful handling of an average pitching staff and wise employment of speed and power." The 27-year-old Robinson was the catalyst for the Montreal Royals in 1946.
One of the Royals pitchers was Bob Fontaine, who had been signed by Brooklyn at the age of 17 in 1941.

Montreal, the largest city in Canada had a rich history with Minor League Baseball, including the Dodgers farm club the Montreal Royals that Jackie Robinson played for in 1946.
The fans in Montreal had their hearts ripped out by the strike, and further stepped on by the dealing away of stars showed their disapproval, by not going to games.
The Montreal Expos were the obvious candidate to be on of the two teams folded by Major League Baseball.

The people, in turn, loved the Royals and then, starting on Opening Day, April 14, 1969, they fell in love with the major league Expos who, for a time, played at quaint little Jarry Park.
Down to their last out, Montreal rallied against Florida in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out, two-run single by Jose Vidro and a game-winning single by Orlando Cabrera.

He was back with the Habs again for another two games in 1953-54, and although he was held pointless during his four games in the NHL, Burchell had the pleasure of playing on the legendary Montreal club that included the likes of; Maurice Richard, Elmer Lach, Bernie Geoffrion, Doug Harvey and Jean Beliveau.
Burchell was traded to Chicago by Montreal for Max Quakenbush on July 3, 1955, but the transaction was voided when Quackenbush announced his retirement just 12 days later.
Burchell continued to play professional hockey for another 12 years with the Montreal Royals, Winnipeg Warriors, Rochester Americans, Quebec Aces, Verdun Pirates, Sherbrooke Castors, Jersey Devils and finally the St. Hyacinthe Saints of the QSHL in 1965-66.
